Since @CaptShazam has announced his departure from this forum, I've volunteered to continue his reading thread series in his place.
The Rules

In an era where Slott's showy "blockbuster" stories were lining the bookstores, it's no surprise that the more personal and smaller-scale stories written by others had a much bigger emotional impact on this reader. "Monsters!", as the Tom DeFalco two-parter was titled, takes a compelling look at the subject of human trafficking and illegal immigrants. Despite its heavy subject, it's still very much a Spider-Man story that conveys the frustration the characters face against the broken system we have in place. The parallels between Carlie trying to do things by-the-book and Spidey trying to break the criminals into talking make a strong point, that the system will work against innocents even if you do things "by-the-book." It's a very thought-provoking tale that, tragically, we didn't get to witness much in Slott's run.
