The 2018 Reading Thread - All New All Daring Edition - July

The Rules
Log everything you've read this year. Just edit your existing post or you (and we) will get confused trying to keep up. At the end of each month, I'll start a new thread and you can pick a "winner" from your favorite books. You can focus on just trades, or just write about the good stuff you've read.

March Winner: Se7en (Zenescope)
April Winner: The Amazing Spider-Man #617: The Rage of the Rhino
May Winner: The Sensational Spider-Man #33.1-33.2
June Winner: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man Omnibus
Quite a lot of runner-ups this past month, from the 700.1 issues of ASM Vol. 1 to "ASM: Family Business." One similarity these stories share was their continuous display of excellent writing that triumphed over anything Slott has written (and this is taking into consideration that the writer for #700.1, David Morrell, author of "Rambo: First Blood," had NO prior comic book writing experience).

But of course, the brilliant Superior Foes of Spider-Man stood above them all, and the writer Nick Spencer will be writing our upcoming run of Amazing Spider-Man for the first time ever, beginning this month. After 10 years of Slott, I couldn't be happier that he's finally replaced by such a fine fellow. And Superior Foes really was definitely a much better take on a sympathetic villain whom we could care about. It's hilarious, it's so damn clever, it's full of strong character writing that could compete with the likes of Tarantino, and best of all, it never felt the need to belittle Peter Parker so that this villain could be seen under a more superior light. Instead, what we got was a very heartwarming ending where our beloved hero,
Peter, acted the way he would towards such a sympathetic villain. He had a nice chat with him over a drink while listening to his story. THAT's the Peter Parker I remember (and in case you forgot, Peter once gave an ex-con a break by convincing him to walk away from a store robbery). It was only a page or two in the final issue, but that depiction of Peter was already far more on-point than most of Slott's work.

I am very impressed with this book and I only wish I could shower it with more praises. It's pretty much the "Guardians of the Galaxy" for Spider-Man (James Gunn version, not the comic book version). Hopefully, we could see a future film adaptation for it.
