The 2019 Reading Thread — The It’s April, Fool Edition

Here you go, ladies and germs!

The Rules
Log everything you've read this year. Just edit your existing post or you (and we) will get confused trying to keep up. At the end of each month, I'll start a new thread and you can pick a "winner" from your favorite books. You can focus on just trades, or just write about the good stuff you've read.

Welcome! What did you think of Sabrina? I enjoyed it, and Veronica Fish’s artwork took another leap forward, I think. I really like what she did.

I really enjoyed Sabrina and I thought Veronica Fish did a good job. I especially liked her cover she did for the book. I also thought the story was good; since my only knowledge of Sabrina comes from the TV sitcom I was right on board. I have enjoyed Kelly Thompson as a writer. I liked her run on Hawkeye and I think just like Veronica Fish she will just keep getting better. Also this is actually the first Archie comic I have read. If you know any other good Archie books out right now let me know (older stuff too).

I actually nominated and voted for Thompson for Breakout Creator of the Year in this year’s CGS awards, so I'm with you there.

As for other Archie books, I would suggest getting Mark Waid’s run of the current ongoing Archie series. Nick Spencer took over the writing just a few months ago, and it's been pretty good too. More like the Riverdale TV show than Mark’s stuff, and not quite as entertaining for me because of that, but still pretty good. Plus Sabrina plays a big role in Spencer’s first storyline.

I would also suggest getting the Sabrina collection they put out last year. It's digest sized, but thicker, and it collects all the Sabrina stories from her creation through 1972, which has all the good stuff. Fair warning, it's black-&-white, in case that's a problem for you.

For me, the best Archie stuff is from the ’50s and ’60s, because that’s when they had their best artists doing their best work. I'm partial to Harry Lucey’s work in particular, so I will always recommend Archie Comics: The Best of Harry Lucey, which is still in print and easy to find.

Thanks nweathington for all the recommendations! I got them added to my ever growing list of stuff to get and I will let you know what I think when I get 'em.
