Movie News: Batman Reboot pushes to 2017

Batman Movie Reboot Pushes To 2017 - Wants Five Year Gap

(mtv.co.uk) The next "reboot" of the Batman movie franchise could be released in 2017, it has been reported.

Warner Bros is claimed by website Batman On Film to have decided to leave a gap of at least five years before making a new movie focused on the caped crusader.

But a new Batman is expected to make an appearance before that in the Justice League movie - which is projected for 2015 and has seen both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Armie Hammer tipped to star.

And it is thought that this could prove the launch pad for a new series of solo outings for Batman with the same actor starring.

Henry Cavill is expected to appear as Superman in the Justice League movie, if the soon-to-be-released Man Of Steel is a success.

If there is going to be a reboot (which is what I would prefer to leave Nolan's version alone), then Joseph Gordon-Levitt should NOT be Batman in the JLA or 2017 reboot. Despite the open-ending of TDKR, I cannot see him as Batman as much as I can see the idea that he becomes Batman.

Second, if this is a reboot, then you cannot have any of the actors from the Nolan versions return in any capacity or the casual viewer will think this is a continuation because they saw the actor in the last group of Batman movies.

If Johnny Storm can pick up a shield and Wade Wilson can put on a ring then Robin can finally put on a cowl.

    I know it's different

    It's just not that different

But it is different. Johnny didn't become the Thing or Wade didn't become Maverick. Both changed franchises. You couldn't have casted Chris O'Donnell as Bruce in Nolan's trilogy & still expect it to be considered a reboot.

Just out of curiosity, @Matt, what makes a Batman reboot okay where as the Spider-Man reboot wasn't in your eyes (not trying to be a dick, just curious to hear your take)?

Total fabrication as fa as I'm concerned. I don't think we've heard any official word that Joseph Gordon Levitt is going to be in JL. Doesn't make sense for him to be in it at all if they are going to reboot everything. Although that would be a very WB think to do.

Though they chose a weird word for it ("tipped"), I think they are saying that Levitt and Hammer are the ones rumored. So no one is saying that anything has been officially said about Levitt and Hammer. There have just be people tipped off that they are in the running for it.

Fair question: Nolan's version was a complete trilogy. He told a story with a beginning, middle, & end. Anything more (aside from a "side-qual" Catwoman movie) is just adding to a story that doesn't need one...like The Dark Knight Strikes Back did to DKR.

Despite the Oz commercials, Raimi didn't give us a Spider-man trilogy. The ending of 3 felt like another sequel, not a concluding chapter. Plus, Raimi was to return for a 4th movie, so there's indications 3 wasn't the end of his vision.

ASM gave us another origin story. I'm sure the Batman reboot will do the same because its the simple story to tell. (Note: Batman, Spidey, & Superman should no longer get origin movies...we ALL know the stories!)

AND, like with ASM, I don't plan on seeing another Batman movie in theaters. I am too satisfied with Nolan's version.

Looking at the Transformers movie; there were 3, but it didn't feel like a trilogy. If the next movie is a reboot, I've got issues. If its a sequel with a new direction, I've got less issues (depending on continuity & the changes.)

Aw, man, now I'm wishing this had happened. It would've landed #3 on my imaginary "like-a-car-crash-can't-turn-away" wishlist!

#1 - Nicolas Cage in Superman Lives - I'd have followed that balding freak of a Superman to the ends of the earth!

#2 - Batman Forever starring Michael Keaton, with Billy Dee Williams as Two Face, Robin Williams as the Riddler, and, introducing, Marlon Wayans as Robin - on a parallel Earth, this movie happened, and that universe imploded.

    #3 - Chris O'Donnell... Batman Begins!

I don't want to argue just to argue but I think you kind of could, when I read that I thought I was missing something from Batman's past because it took a minute to remember who Chris O'Donnell was. That kind of puts me in the casual fan category. But 7 years between those two movies would have been enough time.

And the way casual fans come and go now 3 years might be enough between Rises and Justice League.

If the movie is written well and the actor is decent I don't know that it matters who it is as long as it's Batman.

I'm not looking to argue, I was just show how your examples weren't the same. Now if Chris O'Donnell gets the part for Justice League and the reboot, then I'd agree there probably be less of a connection from the 90s movie to the casual fan. I'm thinking studios would just want a clean break with reboots.

Agreed. I liked ASM a whole lot more than you did, but even I was a little annoyed to have to sit through the entire origin again. I just wish they'd do superhero movies like Bond movies - continuity-light continuations of the general story, and if they feel the need to recount the origin, do it quickly in flashback, or make like in The Incredible Hulk and throw it into the credits sequence.

A little review is probably useful for new audience members every few years/movies/stories (like the "For those who came in late..." strips that start every 2nd or 3rd Phantom storyline in the newspaper strip), but you don't have to always commit a whole movie to it.

I agree. Casino Royale was supposed to be a 00-reboot, but it could've easily been part of the prior continuity, just in a different part of the Bond timeline.

    Prediction:

The new Superman movie does well but below expectations of the corporate suits. This scares them off a Justice League movie. Then the next Batman movie does amazing business and we are right back where we started.

By all that is holy and just... look at what we missed out on people!

I want a poster of that second image, full color.

(Truthfully... I think I like that costume better than the one for Man of Steel. I can take the rubber look, I just can't stand all that "texture.")

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

I'm curious now who is going to be able to direct Affleck in this starring role and screenplay he co-wrote and was planning to direct? Was he just in over his head?

I've always thought casting him was a mistake. He's an overrated actor and director. Every role he has played, in my mind, he is never able to disappear in the role. I always think "that's Ben Affleck" and it takes me out of the story, I also think making this version of Batman so much older was ill-advised. Now, after so many missteps with the DCEU including the second or third director walking off of the Flash, I just think this whole DC movie universe experiment designed to compete with Marvel has been a disaster.

Full disclosure: I was disappointed in Man of Steel, hated Batman v Superman, and was underwhelmed by Suicide Squad.

Studio: Ben, we think your vision for this film sucks and we cannot let you direct this. Yes, we know this looks bad since we let so much garbage actually get made. We still have you under contract to star in it so play nice or we will sue you into oblivion.

    Or...

Ben: Hey, I just got a thousand notes from you on a movie that has not starting shooting yet. I do not need this headache. I would walk from this completely but there is a contract, my last movie tanked, my kids like that their dad is Batman, and the support payments to Jenn are killing me. Call me when you need me on set.

I've been disputing this movie since the buzz first started. Not that the movie shouldn't happen, but that it will happen & that Affleck would do everything. Ben is out as director, but I still doubt this solo movie will occur.

I think we'll continue to see Batman sprinkled throughout the DCEU movies instead. He'll be used as Nick Fury character in the movies.

I'll say this if they do get Matt Reeves to direct. Then maybe I can be hopeful. (Please don't suck War for the Planet of the Apes)

Although it's not like we haven't had plenty of good Batman movies to fall back on.

Well now WB is completely throwing out the script.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/markhughes/2017/02/08/the-batman-movie-gets-new-script-new-director-and-likely-2019-release/#5481f3bf51f8

And you know what I'm fine with this. I'm someone who loved Man of Steel. Liked most of BvS but recognize it has a ton of issues. And didn't like Suicide Squad. And hope for the best for Wonder Woman and Justice League.

But with this and the issues with the Flash(page one rewrite, three directors leaving) maybe the best thing is for WB to just step back, take a breath and work this thing out.

This is looking like it's going to be a disaster for DC. Affleck now has no ownership in this anymore.

I confess, I was never on-board with Affleck as an older Batman to begin with.

If Wonder Woman doesn't connect, I question the continued investment of WB into the DCEU.

Supposedly it was a false report.

Truthfully, I question the validity of this like I did when David Ayers denied Suicide Squad reshoots.

By the end of the week, at the latest, I'm sure there'll be a rebuttal by WB or Affleck.

Affleck isn't directing, and now it's reported that director Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) is out of the picture, Warner Bros is going to be looking for a 3rd director. The Flash has also already lost two directors so far.
