Movie News: New Hulk Movie?

Marvel Axing CGI Heavy HULK TV Series To Focus On Film For 2015?

(celluloidandcigaretteburns) Today, we learned that Joss Whedon would be putting together a television series based on Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. for ABC. The odd part of this announcement is that it's going straight to pilot while the Hulk pilot has yet to be greenlit. My opinion is, Marvel might have axed their plans for a Hulk series after the massive success of The Avengers. Along with the call from fans for another Hulk film. Mark Ruffalo and Joss Whedon have already teased plans already being in motion around the time of Avengers' release in May.

The Hulk series seemed to be a giant headache for both ABC and Marvel. Considering how difficult it is to develop a compelling/cost effective show that included a good amount of CGI. Effects, that aren't cheap to begin with and could end up looking terrible. I believe that Marvel could have pushed S.H.I.E.L.D. into production to cover their asses with ABC to fill the pilot slot left by Hulk. Plus, why throw away perfectly solid plot points that could be used for the film franchise in a TV series?

Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy 1-2, Blade 2, Pacific Rim) had been attached to direct the series pilot but is likely in talks to helm the film instead. The writer/director has had a long standing history with Marvel starting with making Blade 2 for New Line. He was also in talks for years to direct Doctor Strange. However, with recent talk from Marvel producers that a new Hulk film is being aimed for a 2015 release date (after Avengers 2?). This is all speculation on my part but I wouldn't doubt that a script from Joss Whedon (who mentioned interest in writing the film) with Guillermo del Toro directing enough to bring new life to the Hulk franchise. Del Toro has a bunch of projects in development but has dropped films before to focus on passion projects.

NOOOOO! Keep Hulk as ONE of the characters in a movie (Avengers, Iron Man, etc) but after 2 movies I'd preferred he not star in a movie.

i had to send mark ruffalo an apology tweet retracting all the negative stuff i said about him before the Avengers came out. I expected that to be terrible and he knocked it out of the park....so...give the man his movie. He earned a shot at a franchise of his own, for sure.

YESSSSSS! Great move. The idea of another mopey-ass Hulk TV series bored me silly. And it would have been a backwards step for the character. As a film, it can be tied into the movie 'verse better, with the possibility of cameos or supporting performances from other characters, both from the other films and from the S.H.I.E.L.D. series.

Hulk's appeal is smashing the crap out of things and people and he would need another threat like in the Avengers to do that. I am thinking off world now that that has been established in the Marvel Movie U. So maybe Planet Hulk somehow. Then Ruffalo could voice the Hulk and give him more of an adventure as the Hulk and he can change back and forth now.

I know for a lot of people, the Hulk was one of the brightest spots in the Avengers movie and I really like Mark Ruffalo as an actor. To be honest, I haven't hated the previous two Hulk movies. Didn't love them or think they were the greatest thing since forever but they were watchable. Having said that, I think this could be interesting.

I personally liked the Incredible Hulk more than the Ang Lee version but neither are the worst thing i've ever seen (that would be: Martians Go Home starring Randy Quaid)
  • Hated Ang Lee's Hulk. In fact, I even fell asleep in the theater watching it.

I enjoyed The Incredible Hulk, even if it did deteriorate into watching a video game at the end.

I'd love to see a take on the Hulk based from The Avengers, though - he's definitely moved into the "hero" category at this point, right? Run with that for a while!
  • I always thought that the Ang Lee Hulk was unduly maligned. Except for a couple of things here and there, I thought it was quite good.

At one point during movie, monster get so enraged he charge into food court and start smashing, stomping, screaming, and trowing Sbarro pizza toppings at frightened children when – Oh, sorry. Dis not scene from movie The Hulk. Dis was Cookie Monster’s REACTION to movie The Hulk, one of de most tortuously long and plodding superhero movies me have reviewed so far. Ang Lee direkts dis film like a 70′s t.v. show, wit so many cheezy wipes and split screens monster feel like he watching an old episode of Streets of San Francisco. Lame dialogue not do much to dispel dis illusion. Only moments it not look like a 70′s t.v. show be during extended CG/visual effects sekwences – when it look like a lame videogame.

The 'cheezy' wipes and split screens were among the couple of things I didn't like, except for one or two sequences where they did seem to work. I didn't think that the story plodded at all; there was simply a lot of build-up and character development they had to do before getting to the Hulk, and I thought they did pretty well with it. Same with the action sequences. The only part of the film I thought was weak was the final battle between father and son, and that did hurt the film.
  • Didnt totally hate Ang's but did not like him growing to like 15 feet. And I agree with the final battle but I did like the stylistic tone of the movie.

It took me 4 attempts over the course of 6 years to finally wade through that version of hulk. I'd get bored or start asking myself why Nick Nolte was in this movie and be done. Eventually, I did make it all the way through and it wasn't awful. I'd give it a C maybe C-. I think the thing that got me is the first transformation seen. Bear with me it's been a while but I seem to remember him transforming alone in a room by himself because of a telephone call?

Now that Marvel has plenty of experience with filmmaking under their belts, I could easily see them building a strong three movie arc out of The Hulk, instead of these hit or miss attempts we've had so far. They just need to decide the approach they want to take and go from there. Planet Hulk, the Microverse stories, the Peter David run... there's plenty to draw from and give us something beyond "Hulk is on the run from the army". We have two movies and a TV series that have covered that angle more then enough.

I would love to see Planet Hulk but you would have the circumstances that put Hulk on that planet be different considering the Hulk is one of the good guys in the Avengers movie. Wouldn't make sense for Tony and Bruce hanging out and talking in the Avengers movie and then have Tony shoot him into space in the Hulk's own movie. Still, I think a Planet Hulk movie would be kind of epic.

For your Planet Hulk needs, watch the animated movie that came out a few years ago.

you know that could actually be really fun. i think a Joe Fix-it Hulk movie would rock!
  • I don't know about the movie, but an animated Hulk DVD might take a leaf from the recent Hulk Smash Avengers mini-series and do a handful of short stories from different periods in the Hulk's past.

    You might enjoy Hulk Vs.
