Prop your Shop

I love my comic shop that I frequent; I think it’s a great place. And I bet you think the same of yours, well let’s lend our voices to promote our comic shops. Where is yours, what’s its name, what makes it special, why do you keep coming back and so on and so forth?

Mine is called Big B Comics, it’s in Hamilton Ontario Canada, I love it, the staff is a 50 50 split of male and female employees who all have a passion for comics and many comic related things. You can chat with any of them for a spell and they will help you out and turn you on to new books from what your pull list is made up of.

Speaking of pull lists, there’s is infallible; I have never missed a book that was on my list. And the more titles you collect, the greater discount is put in place. My current discount from the books I get comes out to adding a nickel to cover price, and that’s after taxes (and here in Canada… we are TAXED) which is very appealing. Another appealing feature is you can email or text changes to your pull list which are adjusted that day.

The setup and aesthetic look of the shop is very friendly and colourful, kid friendly with the adult titles out of the way yet very accessible to mature readers.

Down stairs is the older books, and they are priced accordingly, I have spent the day down there and had a staff member bring me a coffee and was encouraged to sit and read and chill out.

When the staff is on break you would think they would leave and chill out… nope they stay and chat comics and other comic related things, there is a passion there and it’s evident.

They have a wide trade paper back and hard cover section that includes used and new books. And if you buy 9 trades the 10th is free… and yes I have gotten a few free trades.

My wife loves it there too and our kids are welcomed as well.

All those factors make Big B Comics the best shop in my opinion.

Look forward to hearing about your shops.

    Got two in northwest Indiana.

Lightspeed Hobbies in Portage and Heroes Haven in Michigan City. I have never had a bad experience at either place. When I tell my wife that I'm stopping by just to grab a couple books or supplies, she knows that I will really be there for an hour, or two. Both are nice stores with great service provided by friendly and knowledgeable people. Check them out if you're ever in the area.
  • I'm afraid I rarely go to comic shops anymore, since I'm miles from the closest (which is a very nice store) and I don't drive anymore. I get all of mine delivered to me through the mail from Westfield Comics. They do run shops in Wisconsin, I understand, but I've never been to them. But their mail service has been impeccable; I've been using them for fifteen years now, and in that time there have only been three or four problems, all of which were quickly and satisfactorily resolved.

Before that, I used to work for Diamond Comics, and I got my books directly from the direct distributor; ah, the perks of an employee!

I checked out Heroes Haven a few times, the guy that runs it is really nice, and he has sales and $1 bins, so that's cool. I just wish he carried more comics (my personal taste). He has lots of games, and I always see people in there playing so that's cool, I just wish he had a wider selection of comics so I could support his new shop more.

My shop is BuyMeToys (www.BuyMeToys.com) in South Bend. It's run by a husband and wife, and they are super nice, and very knowledgable. They actually just got a new system for pull list people when you go to checkout it gives them a list on the screen of what your list is, and they double check to make sure you have all of your books at checkout. They (obviously) have tons of toys, but also lots of comics and back issues, and a pretty nice trade selection.

@Nick - BuyMeToys is a great shop, been in there a few times before I got back into comics, it's definitely a shop worth checking out. It's been a long while since I've been in there.
  • In the last four years of being back into comics, I now have my pull list at a third shop. First shop got so bad in pulling the books I wanted, and I had found Fearless Readers (now only online... it's the place we're not supposed to talk about, that doesn't exist), so I switched to there. When they went online only, about a year ago, I switched to where I am now, Bell, Book & Comics. They have been excellent about getting the books I want to me on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. If anything would happen to that store (out of business, or get bad in getting me what I want, or whatever), then I'm quite sure I'd switch to all digital.

I wish I had a good LCS near me. There is one but it is dark, musty, and never have books I am looking for. It's dcbs only for me now. I wouldn't mind driving a little further so if anybody knows a good shop somewhat near Detroit, I'm all ears.
