It seems that the UK Blu-ray will not have the extras that are on the US version. This includes the Joss Whedon commentary. It might be better to wait to see if the US version is region free or just wait for the inevitable special edition.
@Marathon For those of you who live in the uk I've just seen sainsburys are offering an exclusive bonus disc with a 90min documentary on with the Bly ray version.

Thanks for that, but I've heard it's just a puff piece about the history of the marvel movies, stitched together from previous interviews and promotional material.
It also says: "It’s worth repeating that the US Blu-ray of The Avengers is Region Free and will therefore play on any Blu-ray player in the world. It not only contains the stabbing in full bloody, pierce-o-vision, it also comes complete with Joss Whedon’s commentary track – also missing from several international releases, including the UK’s. And it has more featurettes and documentary material too."

Thanks Marathon. Looks like I'll be forking out the extra postage from the us amazon site then!
The lack of special features and the slightly altered scene involving Agent Coulson actually made it onto tonight's episode of Watchdog (a prime time consumer affairs show on BBC1 for those not in the UK).

I doubt it'll be enough to shame Disney into actually doing anything about it. The tone of their acknowledgement seem to be clear that they didn't consider it a big deal.

It's the extras that are the problem.
However Bleeding Cool has a story on the blu-ray being censored in various countries:
