James Bond & Skyfall

As James Bond celebrates his 50th anniversary on the big screen & Skyfall approaches, here is the upcoming film's theme song:

Personally, I'd love to hear the CGS crew's thoughts on Bond (films, novels, comics, etc). I'd be interested to know what people think is the best movie, theme, novel, villain. If I had to choose just one, it would be Goldfinger. I still love just about everything in that movie. Connery is the top 007 and I hate to say it but Brosnan was better as Remington Steele.

  • I'm a huge bond fan! I'm looking forward to skyfall. You know they got the 'bad' one out of the way with quantum.

Even so, I'd take Quantum over any of the Brosnan movies, which I'd put barely above A View to a Kill and well below the much wrongly maligned Dalton films.

I will say that I've felt like both Casino and Quantum suffered a bit from some decompression. Casino was at least 20-30 minutes too long.

  • To me, license to kill is the worst bond film. Then quantum, view,to a kill, and the last two brosnans.

My favorite is from Russia with love. Then in order, on her majesty's secret service, live and let die, living daylights, gold finger,
  • I've always thought that each Bond actor should have at least one "great" film.

    Poor Timothy Dalton.

On her majesty's secret service is the only Bond film I like. Never been a big fan of Sean Connery. But loved Lazenby as Bond. Plus that one has Diana Rigg as as Bond's wife. I wish we had gotten at least one more film with Lazenby as Bond.

005 - George Lazenby (could have been great with a good production team)
004 - Roger Moore (the goofy Bond, I grew up in the Moore era, therefore...)

002 - Sean Connery (the original macho version)
001 - Daniel Craig (just perfect for this role)

    Photobucket

I like the way you think Mike. Those are my go to Bond flicks.
  • I think I've seen one...
  • Any Bond novel fans? I have always enjoyed the films but the novels are really on another level.

As for the films, I know people will disagree but I put Casino and Quantum at the top. I grew up with the Connery and Moore films but once the Craig movies came out those just seemed cartoony and in a class below. Craig is definitely my Bond.

What do you all think about the 'code-name' theory about Bond?
The idea is that 'James Bond' is just a code name given to a particular agent. Therefore Sean Connery, Roger Moore etc. are all actually playing different people.

Alan Moore has just gone with that theory in the latest League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Haven't read a Bond novel yet. Matter of little time and too much to read. If I'd only read one - which one should it be ?

    I agree on Craig.

They are very quick reads, my two favorites are "Casino Royale" and "Moonraker" (nothing at all like the film).

I'm with Mike at least as far as the top two. From Russia with Love is my favorite and has my favorite fight scene (you know the one) of pretty much any movie ever made. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is a close second. After that it's probably Goldfinger, Thunderball, and Casino Royale, though not necessarily in that order. Depending on how I'm feeling, The Man with the Golden Gun might slip in there.

iTunes just had a sale on Bond films. I picked up five for $5 each. I've never seen early Bond (Connery) and so I'm excited to get into these. I did finally watch Goldfinger the other day and man, that was fun! Is it wrong to think that the Bond girls were sexier back then?

On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my favorite Bond movie, no question. Lazenby is underrated, and Diana Rigg was just all kinds of perfect for the part. After that, my favorites are probably Goldfinger, Thunderball, and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Yes, really on the last one. I don't mind my Bond films gadgety, and Michelle Yeoh kicks ass. And I liked Brosnan as Bond. The World Is Not Enough was pretty painful, but I liked the other ones pretty well (though I suspect a lot of my appreciation for Die Another Day is tied up in the chick with the sword).

I remember as a kid watching Bond movies on ABC on Sunday night. That was an event. Haven't watched an early ones for awhile now. Nice to see the franchise still chugging along.
  • My favorite Bond novels are the Blofeld trilogy: On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice and Man With The Golden Gun. Just great adventure novels, and a nice way of using the character.

As for the movies...let me put it this way: I find the Moore movies unwatchable and any of the movies that actually adapt one of the Fleming novels is always going to be head a shoulders above any others.

And I watch On Her Majesty's Secret Service every couple of years. Just a great, under-rated movie.

Yes!!! Me too! I never got to finish one as they were on past my bedtime. Soi would try to sneak out of bed to at least hear what was going on.
My dad took me to every bond film upon release from 1974 to 1997. I miss that.

Brosnan could have been the perfect Bond, and he usually had pretty strong supporting casts. But he was the victim of horrible screenplays, IMHO. Die Another Day is nearly unwatchable for me, even though I liked the villain and Rosamund Pike.

    My top five:

    1. Goldfinger
    2. From Russia with Love
    3. The Spy Who Loved Me
    4. Casino Royale
    5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service

    My bottom five:

    1. A View to a Kill (can't stand Tanya Roberts--would have been much better without her)
    2. Moonraker (poor Bond girl and over the top)
    3. Die Another Day (couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy it)
    4. The World is Not Enough (Denise Richards is terrible)
    5. Diamonds are Forever (far and away the worse Connory flick)

Technically, the first Bond would have been Barry Nelson in a 1954 television production of Casino Royale. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_Royale_%28Climax!%29

I could go on and on with Bond lists and opinions but sticking to the thread title, Skyfall premiere is going to be like a National holiday in shroud68's house. Going to see it on opening day first showing with the kids and Tuesday afternoon with my parents. Admitedly I would see it the same if it did not look good but as it were Skyfall looks AWESOME!!!!!!

That was also my introduction to the Bond films. But my dad made a rare exception and let me stay up past my bedtime to watch them. The first one I saw in the theater was Moonraker—certainly not the best, but a lot of fun for a nine-year-old.

Looking forward to it. Daniel Craig is my favorite bond.

And pretty sure my girlfriend hopes he's stripped naked again.
