In this the 'Year of the Avengers', we realized we've never done a Top 5 Avengers list before. Longtime listener Mario Muscar helps us remedy that as he joins us for this episode. (1:15:57)
This all wrong! The roster has classicly been based around a six member team, yeah its gone down to less than even five,... oh my stars and garters....picking my top five will not be easy.
1A & B. Cap and Thor. - I've never considered Iron man one of the "big three" alot of has to do Marvel force feeding me those three as the big three. Tony gets credit as a founding member, but he doesn't make my cut, but Cap and Thor have always been a staple for this team, I would take Wasp over Iron Man as my big three of the Avengers.
2A & B. Vision and Scarlet Witch
3. Hawkeye
4A & B. Wonder Man and Beast
5A & B. Janet and Hank
Honorable Mentions Spider-Woman Carol Danvers She-Hulk Hercules Black Knight
Black Knight (w ebony blade) Hercules ( in olympian outfit) Hawkeye ( in purple with mask) Moon Knight Wonderman (I like the black sleeveless look with red accents WM on chest)
I like all of them in avengers team stories and not as much when they are on there own.
1. Hulk(one of my all-time favorite characters in the Marvel universe) 2. Thor(love the mythology behind the character) 3. Captain America(love those old, over-the-top war stories) 4. Firestar(I can relate to her struggles with cancer) 5. Scarlet Witch(sexy...)
Runners-up: Hawkeye, Quake , Iron Man*
*never liked Iron Man in the comics - but LOVE the movie version
Really enjoyed the comments on Hank Pym. He IS the John Jones of the group. I hadn't thought of him like that.
No, I would say The Vision is the John Jones of the group. He's the outsider who can't quite fit into society, and who's only real home is within the structure of the team. There's a bit of sadness in both characters, and they both provide a moral compass for their teams.
Pym is more like the Atom of the Avengers. An obvious analogy, I know, but besides the shrinking powers, he's the guy they call when they have a science-related problem. The difference is that where as it’s Ray Palmer's wife, Jean Loring, who occasionally goes crazy and commits spousal abuse, here it’s Hank that occasionally goes crazy and commits spousal abuse.
So, as a kid I LOVED the "pair off and fight" issues, so I didn't often question the motives of the characters. Plus, I was a bigger Whackos fan, so I loved that Clint beat Shulkie! And, to my mind, the fact that Bucky and Osborn were in the Legion of the Dead helps me ignore the Winter Soldier and Green Goblin storylines of recent memory! And I love stories where a fairly ordinary character saves the Universe. There was an issue of Avengers where Spidey was tagging along (not yet a member) and he saved the whole universe (with an assist from Sersi), but he did so with brute strength and technology. Clint Barton, regular old Hawkeye, did so with cunning, charm and a little sleight of hand. For the record, Tony Stark accidentally destroys 1/5 of the universe in the issue, if I remember correctly. But, of course, the best twist was that the game was fixed, and each Avenger that died during the mission was recruited to play on the Legion of the Dead's team in the next round. That left Hawkeye and Captain America as the only living members, against impossible odds. So Clint falls back on his carny background and preys on the Grandmaster's obsession with games. He gives him a 50/50 chance to win or lose in a "pick which hand the arrowhead is in" game. Of course, the Grandmaster can't help but accept, and HE PICKS THE EMPTY HAND! The universe is saved! Cap, of course, thinks it's blind luck, but Clint, equal parts sneaky and wise, actually pocketed the arrowhead in a deft move, fixing the game. So thanks, Clint Barton, for saving the WHOLE DARN UNIVERSE!

Technically the Vision is not and android, he is a synthezoid (a synthetic life form)
In no particular order:
Loki should be an honorary Avenger. He did bring them all together.
WHAT THE!?!?!
Hawkeye
Vision
Beast
Wonder Man
She-Hulk
however, in my mind, at least 2 out of the Big 3 have to be there for a book to be called Avengers.
2. Thor
3. Iron Man
4. Scarlet Witch
5. Hawkeye
4. Thor
3. Hulk
2. Iron Man
1. Captain America (if sober)
