Off the top of my head:

    Underwater Welder
    A Wrinkle in Time
Batman Court of Owls Vol. 1 / Swamp Thing: Vol. 1 / Animal Man Vol. 1
    Cardboard
    Daredevil: Vol. 1

I included the DCnU stuff all together 'cause it's my list and I can.

Love graphic novels. If you've not read Petrograd, totally do. It's awesome. Realistic gay characters (though the real life people they're based on were so outlandish, the fact that the creators accomplished the tough task of making them realistic alongside their absurdity is a testament to their mad skillz).

It sounds interesting and I added it to my DCBS order. However, Amazon lists the publish date as 2011 and I thought that @luke52's post was for 2012 GNs. But if it's as good as you say, maybe we should let it slide? :)
  • I agree Petrograd is a great book with great artwork by Tyler Crook, the current artist of B.P.R.D., but it is over a year old.

Sorry. I'm new around here and I'm big on graphic novels (I write and draw them, then they sit in obscurity; I'm still amateur). Can anyone tell me more about Cardboard, and B.P.R.D.?
  • B.P.R.D. is a spin-off of Hellboy. It ran as a series of mini-series and one-shots until this month, when it went monthly with issue #100. Crook took over as the artist of the main storyline a few months back after Guy Davis left the series. If you like Lovecraftian horror, you'll probably like the book.

Cardboard is a book by Doug TenNapel. TenNapel is the creator of Earthworm Jim, a mid-nineties video game character. He has since gone on to be a premier independent comic writer and artist. I've read most of his stuff and love it all. His last three books have been 200+ color original graphic novels. Also, each of his works have spiritual overtones that really appeal to me. (click the link above to go to Amazon's page and you can see a sample of the book)

    Cardboard back cover description:
Cam's down-and-out father gives him a cardboard box for his birthday and he knows it's the worst present ever. So to make the best of a bad situation, they bend the cardboard into a man-and to their astonishment, it comes magically to life. But the neighborhood bully, Marcus, warps the powerful cardboard into his own evil creations that threaten to destroy them all!

If you end up picking this up, I would also recommend checking out Ghostopolis and Bad Island. I've read all three with my 7-year-old son so they're suitable for all ages.

I knew this thread would cost me! Cardboard sounds pretty interesting and I've heard a lot of good tuings about A Wrinkle In Time. That's two added to my wish list.

Have to agree with @nweathington B.P.R.D is very Lovecraftian. I haven't read a lot of it, but what I have I've liked.
  • TenNapel is pretty reliable. I've read Ghostopolis, Creature Tech, and Iron West, and while I’m not rushing out to get the rest of his books, they were all very solid. You get plenty of action with a little weirdness and a little humor. And his artwork is lovely.
