The mutant menace

Am I the only one that hopes that marvel now is the beginning of the end of the whole mutant menace story in the Marvel U. Isn't it a little odd that in a world where everyone loves Captain America, the Fantastic Four, and many other heroes, a large percentage of the population hate all mutants. This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, just think of this exchange “Hey Steve wouldn’t it be great to have super powers like the Human Torch or Spider-Man”. “Sure Jim, as long as those powers came from some accident or painful procedure and not naturally from birth, I mean I don’t want to be a freak”. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when you think about it that way does it? I do understand the significance of the idea for these stories at the time when the X-Men were created but I think the idea of an all out hate fest on mutants is well past its prime.

I do not know what the numbers are, but there are a couple episodes in the show history in which Deemer basically says this too.

The mutant menace concept has been around for several decades and sadly I do not think we have seen the last of it.

As long as there is some kind of racism or hatred for people who are just born different, it will be around.

It won't go away because "the mutant menace" is a super powered metaphor for the outcast segments of society.

Agreed but think of it like this. Spider-Man was hated among the public for some time. He was considered a menace. I mean, J. Jonah Jameson made him that way but the result is the same. The Hulk has been wanted by the Army for the majority of his publishing career. Captain America is just a normal guy who got abilities due to a government experiment. The origin of the Fantastic Four's abilities are public knowledge if I remember this correctly and they are celebrities in the same manner the Wasp is and Iron Man is just a dude with armor. Yes, I think the mutant menace is kind of an outdated plot device but in some ways I still think it makes sense even now. Also, not all non-mutant powered characters are loved like Captain America.

Although I agree that it is frustrating that it never seems to get better. I wish they would introduce a group of humans that are Pro-Mutant. Would make it a bit more interesting.

I have to admit, I LOVED how Morrison dealt with it in his X-Men run. Treat them like a minority in the US where there are people who hate and fear them, but there are also people who are intrigued by their culture, some people who agree with their quest for rights, etc... I think that that "hated and persecuted" thing should always be there in some form, but it should be made much more modern.

I know it doesn't always make sense but I've liked the mutant menace angle in the X-Men books. I think this is why they do best in their own corner of the Marvel U. I like a good crossover or guest appearance with the other Marvel heroes but integrating them fully into the regular Marvel U is a mistake, imho.

Agreed. I loved how he got into the mutant subculture in a way I don't think other writers had before (or have since). I love that there were mutant neighborhoods, a thriving mutant punk band scene (with names like Sentinel Bait and Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut), kids wearing those Magneto Was Right t-shirts like college kids wear Che Guevara shirts, etc.
