Would I be confused if I started reading Astonishing X-men/Where to start?

I've always been a big fan of superheroes, but it wasn't until this year that I actually started reading comics. Up until now, I've been reading only DC comics because I've just always liked their characters better. I really like the X-Men movies though, so I was thinking I might start reading Astonishing X-Men. I'm not sure how far back I should go though. I usually wait for the trades because I don't have the time to bus down to the comic book store every week, but I'm not sure if I should wait for the next volume and just jump in there or would I be really confused? Would I have to go all the way back to volume 1 to understand what's going on, or...? And even if I do start with Vol. 1, is there going to be a lot of references to stuff I wouldn't know about?

Sorry for being such a newb. :) Happy Holidays!

The best place to start is with issue 1 of Josh's run. Pretty much everything after he leaves is crap.

Yeah, those Whedon issues are pretty great. If you like his TV work, you'll like those. It's really fun to read them in collected form because you can see his long game coming together and how these smaller arcs tell a bigger overall story.

He does reference some of the Grant Morrison run on New X-Men, but not so much that you won't have any idea what's going on.
