I always enjoy when Funky pays homage to classic covers with their Sunday strip
I agree with you; I also enjoy these homages. Unfortunately, there's a gang of commenters/harassers on the syndicator's site who mercilessly and unfairly take Batiuk to task every time he does one of these, accusing him of being too lazy to redraw the entire original cover in his style and that he's 'cheating' in order to make a fast buck. (Of course, they also mock everything else he does as well, so there's nothing new there.)

I’m with you. I’ve talked with Tom on multiple occasions, and he has a great respect for the comic book creators of the past. He likes to get commission drawings from the older guys, and I appreciate that he tries to give them some measure of recognition in his strip. When he does these homages, he’s not just paying tribute to the comics he loved as a kid, he’s paying tribute to the artists who drew them. Doing them in his own art style would kind of defeat the point.
Dick Tracy has had quite a few guest-stars from other strips the past couple of years, including Mary Perkins (On Stage!) and Popeye. It's really a fun read these days.
