Marvel President Confirms a Doctor Strange Movie
(themarysue.com) In an interview with MTV, Marvel President Kevin Feige confirmed that Ant-Man will be the first movie in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Three (which we kind of already knew), talked about how Iron Man 3 will connect with The Avengers sequel (potentially interesting…), and confirmed that Marvel’s planning a Doctor Strange movie for after Ant-Man.
One of those bits of news is far and away more exciting than the other two, and I don’t think I need to tell you which one.
Speaking about Phase Three, a.k.a. the movies being released after The Avengers sequel comes out in summer 2015, Marvel President Kevin Feige explained:
“‘Ant-Man’ is the only one officially announced, but you probably don’t have to look too far to guess at the next list of characters we’re toying with and beginning to develop…’Doctor Strange,’ which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them. He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is ‘Ant-Man,’ which keeps us excited.”
Soooo… don’t consider it “officially announced” yet or anything, but Feige says Doctor Strange is happening, and hey, he’s the President, I trust him. There’s no news yet other than “This is happening!”—not surprising given it’ll be coming out after Ant-Man, which won’t hit theaters for almost another three years. So there’s probably not much that’s been done Doctor Strange-wise at this point.
But what about Marvel movies coming out a little sooner? Feige had this to say about Iron Man 3 and how it will tie into The Avengers 2.
“I would say that the exercise of this film [Iron Man 3] is very much standalone, more so than any ‘Iron Man’ film since the first one. But because we are in Phase Two and we’re heading towards another ‘Avengers’ movie, there’s certainly a road that’s being paved — you just might not notice it…While you’re driving on the road, not knowing where it’s going, you might not realize that there are road signs and signals and lane changes that we’re setting up now — they might not be readily apparent the first time you see the movie.”
He also said that he’s read Joss Whedon’s first Avengers sequel outline and that there are “seven things in there that are worth the price of admission alone.” Seven things as in… seven members of the team? As in, one more than was in The Avengers?
Turning on speculation mode for a moment, if seeds planted in Iron Man 3 lead to something new in the Avengers sequel, and if that “something new” is another member of the team… that theory that the the Wasp will be introduced in Iron Man 3 just got a lot more interesting.
