FCBD 2013

I thought it would be nice to have a topic for free comic book day this year. Two questions immediately come to mind:

What did you get?

And, what did you enjoy?

I picked up a few this year. Along with DC's Superman and Marvels Infinity issues I also got...

Mouseguard/Rust flip book
Atomic Robo
Molly Danger/Princeless
Endangered Weapon B
Bongo free for all
Bleeding cool and
Over streets comic book marketplace

I've only read a couple so far, but those two, Atomic Robo and Mouseguard were as good as you'd expect.

What were everyone else's thought on this years selection???

Kind of a cheap rip off that the Superman offering was just a reprint section of the "Last Son" storyline...

All I got was Infinity. My shop was cleaned out, but I wasn't that hype for it anyway. I'm just mad I forgot to order my free ones in my DCBS shipment. FCBD has kinda lost its luster to me.

Nothing this year. I'm sure I'll obtain Infinity some way, somehow.

Here is what I picked up FCBDwise:

FCBD 2013 ATOMIC ROBO & FRIENDS
    FCBD 2013 JUDGE DREDD CLASSICS
FCBD 2013 MOUSE GUARD / RUST FLIP BOOK
    FCBD 2013 SUPERMAN SPECIAL EDITION
    FCBD 2013 WALKING DEAD SPECIAL

I will read these in about the 1st week of June since I'm a DCBS costomer & go for monthly shipping. So I'm just reading other comics to fill the void right now.

    FUBAR
    Marvel Infinity
    Marvel Hulk Agent of Smash
    Archie Megaman/Sonic flipbook
    Archaia MouseGuard/Rust flipbook
    DC Last Son of Krypton
    Top Shelf Kids
    Kabloom
    Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles
    Batman Strikes
    Disney Faeries

INfinity was impressive, Hickman, Jimmy Cheung art and Thanos are a good mix. Agent of Smash was painful, still shots from the animated series. MegaMan/Sonic was a Zero Issue Prelude to a Archie Comics crossover which according to my son was great. FUBAR is more of the same, if you like that zombie vs historical armies stuff but it all feels the same. Last Son of Krypton was a reprint of that great Johns/Kubert run a few years ago I suppose as a teaser for the Man of Steel film. Top Shelf as always is the best along side Archaia. I love FCBD not just cause I'm broke but becuase I think of a young Shroud68 30 years ago how much more I would have been exposed to. Some kid out there is getting hooked for life and for that reason this is a great promotion even if it is just bonus time for me and my family.

And while everybody is entitled to to their opinion as this forum will attest to I think some of the negative tone towards Free Comic Book Day in general is questionable. These books and this promotion is not really designed for this community, it's not targeted to us, it's for new readers. A re-print of a strong Superman story dove tailing into Man of Steel is smart marketing. And quite frankly when DC did the Zero Issue of War of New Krypton or whatever it was called it was smart as well but I'm sure it did not lead into new readers like they wanted so DC should stick with a reprint. Last Son of Krypton is a good start up issue if anybody has a basic knowledge of Superman. I saw plenty of kids with their eyes wide open and pawing through the kids FCBD selections like Megaman and Archaia. I love to see this. I want this community to grow beyond the 20-45 year old W/M demographic I'm sure the majority of this community consists of despite the shout down I'm going to get for daring to pigeon hole comic fans. If FCBD gets younger readers all the power to them sh**y Superman re-print or not.

    I second what @shroud68 said.

My two-and-a-half year old had a great time. We went to Manhattan Comics (not our usual shop, but we were in the neighborhood, and I do like them). They had their shelves in the back set up so that all the FBCD books could face out and be very visible, and I let her have at it (with some guidance, of course).

She came out with Sesame Street, an Archie digest, Tinkerbell, Peanuts, and they had a sale going on, so I also bought her whatever she wanted from the kids box (she chose a Monsters, Inc.)

And she is actually picking through that pile (again) right now while having her breakfast.

I didn't grab Infinity, as I used all my picks for her, but there will be all sorts of places I am sure I can get Infinity later, or the Walking Dead special (DCBS might send it to me, it will probably be free on Comixology pretty soon, etc.) But that didn't matter. She got to go in an out of a funnbook store like it was Halloween, and she loved that. And she (and the other kids I saw, as well as the sorts of adults that may have never been in there before) are absolutely who it is for. The shops, distributor, and publishers are spending promo money on this, as it is a promotion. It is a day of "Got Comics?" for the industry. And we are the folks that "Got Comics?" doesn't need to be aimed at.

My local shop bundles the freebies into two packages, and the customer gets his choice of which package he can take. I took the superhero pack which gave me the Infinity preview, Steam Engines Of Oz, Superman - Last Son Of Krypton, Valiant 2013 and Walking Dead. Of all these, the one I wish I could have given back was the Walking Dead -- I don't like, and I mean I really don't like, zombie stories. I never liked them and I'm sick to the teeth of the whole phenomenon. Even the really decent art by Charles Adlard isn't enough to overcome my dislike of this sub-genre. (The only zombie stories I've ever liked was the Tales Of The Zombie series done in the 70's by Steve Gerber and Pablo Marcos, and the fact that it was written by Steve Gerber goes a long way to explaining why I like it.) I wish, in fact, that I could have swapped this book for the Mouse Guard freebie, but that wasn't an option and I wasn't going to ask with a long line pressing behind me.

I did in-store appearances at two different stores on Saturday and Sunday. Still pretty wiped out. Generally, as I'm "working" there, I don't hit the freebies table until I split for the day. They were pretty much picked clean, but I snagged a copy of whatever was left.

It was great because there were so many kids there, and it was fun watching them decide which books they wanted as if it were a question of life or death. We know better, right adults ?! :)

Generally when a store has me out to hawk my wares, I end up buying stuff from them as a way of saying thanks. I scored quite a bit of cool stuff, but the real big score was one of those Vampirella Archive books they let me have for $20. It has a damaged dust cover so they wanted to unload it. Score of the year so far...

Here's a picture of me on Day 2...barely coherent...

    Let me clarify.

You have to understand, my first experience with FCBD was the Blackest Night #0. My next was War of the Superman #0. My last one before this one? The New 52 issue that teased Trinity War.

That, coupled with the fact that I was under the impression that the Superman issue was going to be new content (not just from experience but this was also something I had heard) led me to be very disappointed that I wasted a pick on a sample version of something I already read/owned.

If FCBD is historically and traditionally a day where companies issue only sampler versions of previously existing content, great. Fine. It's a day where, more than any other, the public can experience their material. Why not put something you KNOW is your best foot forward. Makes sense.

All of your logic makes sense. And I agree. But I was pissed based solely on my experience, not the history of FCBD.

Fair point and in all honesty I had hoped for a new story as well because I loved Blackest Night and enjoyed the whole New Krypton storyline. Marvel's Infinity hopefully made up for it.

I took my daughter to Midtown Comics on Fulton Street. It was a big day for her. It was her first time on a bus. Also the first time on the subway and the first time at a comic book shop. She had so much fun on the bus and on the subway. She liked the comic book shop a whole lot. She loved running around the shop and looking at all the books and the toys. Although, she did quite taken by a statue of Thanos. I wonder if I should be worried about that. Oh well. It was such a good time.

I took my two kids to two different shops. Between the three of us, we got:

    Mouse Guard/Rust
    The Stuff of Legend/Finding Gossamyr
    Bongo Comics Free for All
    Infinity
    Atomic Robo
    Spongebob Freestyle Funnies
    Molly Danger/Princeless
    Kaboom!
    TMNT
    Batman Strikes/Teen Titans Go!
    World of Archie Digest
    Star Wars/Avatar
    Mr. Puzzle

All free, no purchase necessary. I’ve only read Mouse Guard so far, but it was as good as always.

The FCBD offering from Kaboom was really good!

Also, I was surprised to find a new Captain Midnight story in the Star Wars/Avatar book. Are there plans for Captain Midnight book?

Ah. That's what I didn't get. I wanted the Atomic Robo comic. As well as the Star Wars one. Oh well. Oh. I didn't see the Molly Danger/Princeless one. I would have loved to have gotten those as well.

Cool. I guess it would be a good enough reason to get a comixology account.

Just finish the Infinity book. Really interesting stuff. That's a book that looks promising.

DC disappoints again, agree with a lot of what Cage. I was hoping for a few pages from the Snyder/Lee. Shame we didn't get it. With that and Batman/Superman on the horizon I'm surprised DC didn't that the opportunity to preview them alongside an old reprint.

I was just patiently waiting for this Hickman penned Thanos story and now my patience is being tested after reading Infinity and checking out the Brevoort interview at CBR. I'm really looking forward to this. Cheung's conept art for Corvus Glaive is sick.
