Nelson, who oversaw the Harry Potter movie franchise for Warner Bros., is also asked about the odds of J.K. Rowling’s beloved characters making the leap to comics. Her short answer made even shorter: Don’t hold your breath.
I remember Jamie D. or Peter talking about the idea of Harry Potter comics telling stories in between the Harry Potter books. Sadly this news closes the door to that possibility.

I've read in the past that Ms. Rowling is not a fan of comics, and does not approve of any sort of comics adaptation.

Yep. She’s always been pretty adamant about that. I'm sure that Bluewater comic “biography” didn’t help to change her opinion.

They're her characters and stories, and if she doesn't want them translated into the comics medium (or letting other creators play in her sandbox, which would have to happen), that's her business and I'm completely fine with that.

I actually don't want more Harry Potter stories, anyway. I really like the ones we got, they make a fun, sweeping narrative with a clear beginning, middle, and end, so let it be done, I say. I haven't even read the supplemental stuff like Beedle the Bard, the Quidditch book, or the monsters one. I'm afraid attempts to expand the stories will just end up diluting them.

I also would imagine that Rowling has been approached about all sorts of other brand extensions (e.g. illustrated story books, interactive e-books, etc.) and turned those down as well. It seems that the only *books* she wants down of those characters are her own. So it may be more about that than any particular dislike she has for comics as a medium.

Well, the Harry Potter empire made her so much money that she has given up billionaire status because she has essentially given Scrooge McDuck money bins worth of cash to charity and is still worth hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars. So I really wouldn't worry about Jo too much/

I think it really comes down to how she wants the books to be perceived. As mentioned, she has two metric tons of cash to keep her warm at night. Now it’s all about her legacy, the books’ place in history and literature, and all that. I do get the impression that she feels a comic book adaptation would somehow cheapen the Literariness (capital L for emphasis) of the books.

Obviously, she doesn’t mind film adaptations or video game adaptations, but those mediums are far enough removed from the books that they can be viewed as separate entities. Comics would involve the written word, and would necessitate a condensed or altered form of her text, and I think that’s the part that bothers her about the concept.

Agreed. I think she feels that, if anyone wants to *read* Harry Potter, that is what her books are for. She has done them, so there is no need for them to be redone as a different sort of reading.
