Battle of the Atom Discussion **SPOILERS**

I did a search and could not find a Discussion thread for Battle of the Atom, other than the Off the Rack which dealt with Issue one, so I thought I would start one. I am a big X-Men fan and have enjoyed this event for the most part. I did have a bit of reckless speculation about how I thought it was going to end though. What if Xorna's real plan B is to reveal who Dazzler really is? What if Mystique was able to keep the Dazzler charade going to the point that it is actually Mystique who gets elected president. This would mean that the assassination of "Dazzler" could of actually a last ditch attempt to prevent Mystique from becoming president. (Also this could mean that Logan's kid could have been a result of a roll in the hay with faux-Dazzler...Maybe?) We already know that "Dazzler" is on the Heli-carrier at the battle, so maybe she is trying some how draw her out. Or maybe she is hoping that SHIELD will send "Dazzler" out to try to calm thing down?
Anybody have any other theories? thoughts? rants?
I am curiously optimistic about the Trial of the Jean Grey. Ultimately I was hoping this storyline was going to end with the return of the real Jean Grey, but it seems we will have to wait a little longer...

I don't have any predictions as far as where the story will go, but I will say that I have been loving the ride. A really great, emotionally grounded event story building out of Bendis' excellent work on ANXM and UXM, and W&TXM and XM have integrated pretty seamlessly so far. Great stuff.
  • Yep I have been loving it so far. All New X-Men has been the kind of x book I have been wanting to read for years and I was very into a crossover that grew out of it. Very fun to read, not to bogged in recent continuity and full of characters I know and like. It feels like a smaller, better executed version of Age of Ultron,

I was totally caught off guard by this cross over event. I threw in the towel with the X-Men years ago and have only been picking up the odd issue and the fringe titles (X-Factor, New Mutants, etc.) I was pulled back in by the All New X-Men and Wolverine & the X-men. I have to admit, the X-men have been getting more and more interesting and the Battle of the Atom has made me pick up more X books than I have in years. I have found it to be a better (more Fun!) event than the current Avenger's Infinity.

Anyone care to spoil the whole back story with Dazzler for me? Last I knew she was jumping around the multi-verse then got hooked up with SHEILD upon her return to the 616. From what I can interpret from MechaScantenii's post it isn't really Dazzler, but Mystique!?! wha? I'm surprised that hasn't been revealed in the Battle of the Atom.
  • Good ending to the event, where we had a big battle, things changed, and there is a lot of plot points they can go with from here. I like how the lines beteen the All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men keep shifting, and you can really see the right and wrong of both sides.

I also liked the fact that SHIELD had BIG anti-mutant tech they wanted to keep secret. With all of the times that there have been BIG X-Men issues, you KNOW Fury and Co would have an Ace int he hole to deal with such thing. Especially when we know they have similar protocols for dealing with Super-Heroes....but not as harshly.

I was satisfied with the event, and it gives a good kick forward to the on-going X-Men stuff.
  • BotA #2 was a pretty good ending to the event. I was way off with what I thought was going to happen. However, the one thing that I am tired of is the "schism" between Cyclops and Wolverine. I am sick of it. I was hoping that this event would bring the two schools back together somehow and for that moment when Cyke and Logan were fighting together...I had hope. But oh well...maybe eventually. Actually, I have always wanted Marvel to do a "Cyclops and the Wolverine" Ongoing Series at some point. (Kinda like they did for Cable and Deadpool.) But I know that will never happen if they hate each other the way the do right now. Maybe having Kurt back will help things on both sides a little.
Also, in Part 8 we saw Raze, future Wolverine's son, go back in time as Cyclops. I can't help but wonder...what if the Professor did see him or sense him? What if the Professor read his mind and then wiped the meeting from his memory? I wouldn't put it past the Professor to use this future-knowledge to his advantage. And maybe allow him enough time to come up with a plan to return somehow? He just had to be to be sure that the plan for return didn't begin until after the event that gave him his future-knowledge. (Reckless time-travel speculation...I know I know.)
With the stuff that is going on with the Inhumans right now doesn't it make sense that Shield would program the Sentinels to hunt Inhumans as well as Mutants? Why would Inhumans be any less of a threat to humans than mutants?

Clarification Spoiler for Hex: Yeah, In Uncanny X-Men #9 Mystique knocked out Dazzler and took her place as a Shield agent. Maybe the future Brotherhood will seek her out for help?

    Inhumans are the new Mutants.

uhm... well, not THE "New Mutants"... but you know what I mean.
We'll all be sick of Inhumans in 6-8 months.

I'm looking forward to a time when we can all be sick of Eternals.

I'm still confused about what went wrong in the future. Was the future Brotherhood evil when they were trying to convince Dazzler to be president or was her death the straw that broke the camel's back? Was that Dazzler killed by Magik? If so, why? The theory she was still Mystique is a good one. But then why is the Brotherhood so upset with humans when it was obvious Magik killed her? Upon her death she would have reverted back to Mystique...argh! lol
