Any Iron Fist fans here?

It was just confirmed that Marvel Now's new 'Weapon' teaser is of a new Iron Fist ongoing. Iron Fist, who will star in his own series on Netflix next year will once again have his own solo series.

Kaare Kyle Andrews will be writing, penciling, inking, coloring and doing the covers for the new series (Wow!). Kaare is describing this story as "a bloody, revenge-fueled martial arts epic." The title launches in April where we will see Danny Rand, "compelled to return from the Western world to the mystical Eastern city where he was raised and trained to fight after seeing his parents die."

What do you guys think of this news and the artwork below?

Marvel's greatest martial artist is and always will be Shang-Chi, the master of kung fu. Current and active member of The Avengers

What do you have against Iron Fist being a white guy?

i dont really know anything about iron fist or shang-chi

why dont they give shang-chi the iron fist power?

it would seem to make more sense...

I'm not sure how long Kaare Andrews can keep up that pace. I really don't know him from anything other than Spider-Man: Reign (which I don't think is as god-aweful as it gets blamed for).

Shang Chi is the Master of Kung Fu, whose own father, the evil Fu Manchu, sent five deadly assassins to murder him on his fifteenth birthday. Danny Rand, however, was sent to certain death at age nineteen by the sinister machinations of the August Personage in Jade, who recognized him as a potential threat to his evil schemes, and ended up punching a dragon to death and stealing the power of its heart, gaining the ability to make his fist like unto a thing of iron.

They were both originated in the heady bronze-age of comics. Not much made sense then, much like today, but since when do any of these origins stories have to make sense? They're just fun to read.

Yes, I'm hoping he's already got a few books in the bag so he has some breathing room. That is entirely too much duty. He needs to learn to delegate?!

Isn't Kun Lun filled with Chinese aliens?

Odd that their champion is blonde...

No qualified Chinese aliens were eligible to be Iron Fist?

    just saying...

Might be a good candidate for a Miles Morales-style reboot... or better yet... make Shang-Chi the next Iron Fist!

Might be some good story to tells from that...

I'm just fine with a white Iron Fist. Why aren't you? I believe there's room for the Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. One is Asian and one is white. We even had an Italian and a black karate kid in the films. Besides, if all of the martial artists in the Marvel universe were Asian, wouldn't that be a little bit racist?

The last thing Iron Fist needs is a reboot.

Plus, the Iron Fist is a legacy thing. Asians have been the Iron Fist in Marvel's past.

can't wait for a story line where a non-white character is the savior of an entire race of caucasians!! like a samurai travels from the east to a medieval anglo land and defeats an evil sorcerer...

    =) i'm just having fun...

but i can think of a lot of story lines where a white male is the savior of an alien race or culture... iron fist, john carter, last samurai, wolverine, tarzan, pocahantas, planet hulk, list goes on....................

Many cultures tend to create storylines with protagonists that the majority of the audience will identify with. That's why there are fewer female super-heroes in American comic books than male super-heroes - far fewer female readers than male readers. It's business. This also accounts for there being very few LGBT, conjoined twin characters, and aborigine characters, etc for example.

I have no problems with Asian protagonists. I'm a huge fan of Shang-Chi. Just don't think they ought to reboot Iron Fist to make him Asian...

Can u recommend any recent Shang-Chi runs that are worth picking up?

I never got into the character. I would really appreciate it!

For some reason I think Dr. Strange's assistant Wong was always more interesting than Shang-Chi... it'd be cool to see the "off beat adventures of Wong, he who deals with the paranormal sh1t Dr. Strange is too important to handle... with cameos from Jarvis"

  • I think @bamfbamf and @bralinator are both completely correct. There is a legacy of "white man's burden" in fiction that looks out of touch with the climate of diversity that exists today... A remnant of imperialist values and ignorance. But complaints about lack of diversity in comics are moot. Business is business, and when it comes down to it you want to sell as many comics, (same applies to movies and TV) as possible and stories that feature minorities tend to only appeal to minorities, while stories featuring the majority tend to appeal to both the majority and minorities, because everyone is more familiar with the culture. In an ideal situation, artforms would not be subject to market forces and would reflect the world better. They are far more influential than vocal minorities who rarely vote with their dollar.

...And This is why good or bad the new Ms. Marvel doesn't hit 12 issues.

I'm there! Big fan since the Brubaker-Fraction-Aja run. The continuation of the series after they left was also good, under-rated IMO. Also, Kaare is a great artist, I just wish he would tone done some of the overtly cartoony elements of his art, which might not fit Iron Fist. But hey, Marvel has me on this one...

Good long-ish interview with Kaare ASndrews about the direction of the new Iron Fist. I was happy to hear he already has four issues ready to roll.

    Great interview!
Makes me even more excited for this mini series!
I say "mini series" because there is no way that Kaare Kyle Andrews can keep up the pace for longer than 10 issues.
Regardless, they will be a killer 10 issues!
