Second Aquaman Series Coming in April

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=50274

Can Aquaman sustain not one, but two ongoing series?

I'm pleased that they're giving it a go, though I question whether or not it's viable. I do think that it's its an opportunity to showcase some of the very few genuinely new characters in the DCU. I've got similar feelings about the glut of Green Lantern titles. I question if they're really needed, but the other spectrums are again, some of the rare innovations in the DCU.

So is this going a "out-of-continuity" book? It sounds interesting but I am surprised by this. Does the Aquaman book have that many people reading it that a second book is necessary?

Doesn’t sound out of continuity to me. They're just saying that Aquaman isn't going to change titles to Aquaman and the Others, and Aquaman will still be monthly with the same creative team. And judging by the image, it’s set in present continuity, and not the past (that is to say, before the events of Aquaman #1).

That being said, no, a second book is not necessary—and I'm as big a fan of Aquaman (the character) as you’ll find. The Others are mildly interesting, but I don’t need to see them every month.

As someone who has never liked Aquaman, doesn't read his current book and has very little context for the new 52 at this point, can I just say "Aquaman and the Others" sounds like the worst, laziest title for a spin-off book. Every time I look at it I hear it in my head like this "Aquaman and, uh, you know, the um, Others, yeah" with a lot of hand waving and shrugging...

I'm sure it makes sense to people who are reading his main book, but since not everyone reading one will read the other and no one not reading Aquaman is going to read Aquaman and the Others, it just sounds like a destined to fail situation.

Yeah, The Others isn’t a particularly dynamic or even descriptive name for a team. And you're right, I can’t see anyone who is not reading the main Aquaman title reading this spin-off. They’re going to be starting off with a considerably smaller readership, and I expect a larger than usual drop in sales numbers from issue #1 to #2. I'll be shocked if the book lasts a year.

The Others storyline is where I dropped off the New52 Aquaman title. I enjoyed the first few issues quite a bit but I didn't think The Others was ever going to end. I didn't know or are about the characters were un-inspired and the boring story dragged on at least 2 issues too long. The idea of a whole series of that is cringe worthy.

I know that people liked the Others and I thought it was interesting but it was interesting with a very particular writer. I wonder how it will be handled with a different writer. It's the same way I feel about a Sinestro on-going.

Having embraced the Aquaman series, I rather like what we've learned of the Others. Granted, it's not a good name, but neither was Batman and the Outsiders or a myriad of other titles.

As I said above, people repeatedly complain about the current lack if new characters (they kill off the "newish" legacy characters and go back to Silver Age roots) but they're at least trying to spin off new characters (inspired or otherwise).

All that said, PlayDohsRepublic is correct in that it's not a title that seems inviting to readers that aren't already familiar with the characters.
  • Aquaman was actually one of the better books of the whole New52 mess. If I hadn't cut the majority of the New52 from my buy list, including Aquaman, I might be inclined to get the new title, especially as Dan Jurgens is attached to it. I did get the recent Annual, and I thoroughly enjoyed John Ostrander's take on the Others -- if he were the writer on the new book, I'd jump right on it.
