A sucker for Comic "Events"

Alright, so here's the deal.

I only came out of my Comics "Dark Ages" about 4-5 years ago, and I haven't branched out too much. I generally find something by fluke and latch on and never let go. Prime example is the original (Peter Parker) Bendis Ultimate Spider-Man run, before it became "Ultimate Comics". I read one, and bought a ton of hardcovers.

But the other thing I'm big on is big, well-written events. I can hear plenty of you groan when I say "events" but when they are done right, or even most-of-the-way right, I'm a sucker. I've knocked off All of the main Crisis books including 52 and the not so great countdown series, as well as Civil War and Ultimate X-Men, but I'm looking for some others.

On deck I'm looking to get Age of Apocalypse, but I'm looking for other good'ers that my fellow geeks can recommend. The only prerequisite is decent writing.

Specifically I'm looking more towards Marvel for now, but I'd bend for a batman/superman/Justice League story. Not too big on the Lanterns so I didn't pick up Blackest Night etc.

But I'll keep an open mind!

Oh and I'm predisposed to trades, cause I get way too messy with floppies!

(Gosh he's picky...)

Secret Wars was my first event trade. I feel like it is a Marvel must.

I generally find that the floppies are usually better than the trades when it comes to events because there are crossovers -- sometimes significant crossovers -- that do not get collected in the trade. The trades are more convenient, but not all-inclusive.

In the 90s, Age of Apocalypse was pretty much what got me to stop reading the X-Men. There were other factors - finances were tight at that time, I didn't care for most mainstream books with their foil variant wraparound pre-wrapped covers. etc.

A few years back I came across the entire trade run for cheap. Figuring "what the heck, let's see what I missed" I picked them up.

It's quite possibly one of the best X-Men extended tales I've read since the glory days of Claremont and Byrne.

It's not perfect...there's good (the Maggie/Rogue relationship continues to inspire fanships to this day) and there's bad (Paige Guthrie they done you wrong!) but along the way you've got great villains, interesting takes on heroes, and a compelling storyline that holds together quite well once they put it in reading order for you (in the trades).

Pick it up if you want what was perhaps one of the biggest events in Marvel comics history.

I really enjoyed the first 4/5 of Fear Itself.....the ending wasn't great though. I really liked the parts about Speedball. His story from the beginning of Civil War till the end of Fear Itself is one of my favorite.

"Planet Hulk" ran 12 issues in The Incredible Hulk title and was fantastic, then was followed by a "World War Hulk" mini-series that I thought was not as good but it does create a full story. And I think there is a "Frontline" series that ties in as well. All of these things are in trade. This was right around the time of Civil War / Secret Invasion. And Planet Hulk was made into an animated movie. I highly recommend that stuff.

Although you said you're not massive on green lantern stuff, I'm not either but really enjoyed Blackest Night.

Avengers vs X-Men was pretty cool too for marvel.

I also loved the RotWorld crossover event with Swamp Thing and Animal Man. One tie in mini series with Frankenstein their too, which was pretty cool. This is a good one if want want something that's a bit different to your usual a list heavy hitters.

Kingdom Come is a must read. While it's not an EVENT, so to speak, it's got connections to just about the entire roster of DC characters.

Certainly given what's happening with Marvel movies, Infinity Gauntlet is a timely read.

Of course, Infinity Gauntlet. Gotta hook that up for sure!
