I just bought this at Half Price Books last week but haven't read it yet. I've heard that Pope can do no wrong, and that this is the project he launched when DC crapped on his Kamandi pitch, so I'm eager to read this for several reasons.
Only the first volume has been released so far, though the first volume of the companion book, The Rise of Aurora West, premiered at CCI:SD last weekend, and should hit shops soon. And technically these are OGNs, not collections. Paul writes and draws Battling Boy, but is only co-writing the Aurora West books. There will be two volumes of each.
All that being said, I liked the first Battling Boy book. It’s not my favorite thing Paul has done, but it’s fun story and a fairly quick read. An interesting take on the novice superhero type of story. It has a bit of a Kirby/Forever People feel to it, where it's kind of light, but kind of epic at the same time. I'm looking forward to the Aurora West book, as I think she's the more interesting character of the two.
Battling Boys art is terrific. Pope really does a good job. I was pissed I missed his art show featuring original artwork from the book at the Society of Illustrators in New York City about 3-4 months ago I think. Goofyish story from what I remember, but then again I didn't get it for the story.
