IDW to collect ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ comic strips

Super excited about this news:

robot6.comicbookresources.com/2014/10/nycc-idw-to-collect-amazing-spider-man-comic-strips/

I hope I can afford it. This really looks like fun. I enjoy reading comics in different formats. Episodic nature of floppies is fun, trades are great for some stories, but I really enjoyed a lot of these strips because they were trying to back at least enough interest to keep you coming back with every installment. Each of which was only a few panels long!

  • This may actually get me to buy something Spider-Man related that's new, even if it is only "new" on a technicality.

If the Spiderman collections are priced like the recent Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman comic strips collection, they will be $32 after DCBS discount.

    Not bad!

I had fun with superior spider man, but I do see where you're coming from. Character has not been the same since he was made an avenger. :-q

Wasn't Marvel doing this already? I've got vol. 1 in TPB from Marvel.

Why in the world would any publisher besides Marvel be doing this, or be allowed to? And yes, that's probably a naive question.

When the Spidey newspaper strip was first launched, I think I was in 7th grade. I read it faithfully and even clipped it for a while. It was very nice to see Lee-Romita working on Spidey again, and I liked it better than whichever writer was working with Ross Andru in Amazing Spider-Man.

Arguable Marvel will make the same or more to license it out than to produce a high quality premium release that has a limited market themselves. For IDW, a publisher specializing in licensed IPs and niche artistic releases, being able to produce a Spider-man title is a no brainer.

This is exactly it. IDW is set up for these prestige projects, and Marvel has an amazing relationship with them. Licensing to IDW for the heavy lifting makes the most financial sense.

This is awesome news. I used to clip out the strips and glue them in a notebook.

With the such an good reationship between IDW, Hasbro and Marvel, my hope for a ROM reprint continues on.

Marvel has already been collecting and releasing these. In fact, the second volume releases in tpb format on November 4, 2014. Both volumes were previously released in hardcover format in 2011. I have a feeling that IDW will do a superior job of this though, so if you haven't already picked these up, waiting on IDW's version is a good plan.

So did I, for years actually. Romita Sr and Andru were my go to artists growing up. Their work defined Peter Parker for me.

I also share your hope and optimism for a ROM reprint. And I am enthusiastic about such an outing. IDW also just announced they are doing a lot of Disney comics in the near future as well as some Carl Banks artist editions. I'm not sure how IDW became so cozy with Disney and Marvel, but it bodes well for comic fans like us.

And it isn't just Marvel comic strips and artist editions that IDW gets to collect and reprint.
