Comments

  • These are my undecided picks so far

Best New Hero/Heroine: Luci from The Wicked and The Divine, by Gillen McKelvie and Wilson Cowles. (Even though she is somehwhat an anti-heroine.)

Best New Villain: the trees inTrees, by Warren Ellis and Jason Howard.

Best New Comic: can't decide between Sex Criminals, Trees, and The Wicked and The Divine. (All Image Comics!)

Best Limited Series: Harlan Ellison's Star Trek The City on the Edge of Forever.

Best Cliffhanger/Moment: the end of The Wicked and Divine #01, or Hazel's first steps in Saga #18 (which was back in January of 2014.)

Best Storyline: either Saga, or Tress, or even Super-Doom, which I really enjoyed, especially Supergirl #34 where she finds a human she can talk and relate to, kisses him and starts her first true relationship.

Best Sleeper/Surprise Hit: She-Hulk by Charles Soule and Javier Pulido, or Silver Surfer by Dan Slott and Mike Allred. Both Marvel books which I picked up by chance and became hooked by. Shame that She-Hulk is being cancelled.

Best Ongoing Comic-Book: There is so much choice! Either Daredevil, Saga, Trees, The Wicked and The Divine, or Sex Criminals or Multiversity. It will be hard for me to choose which one of these is the best.

Best Graphic Album: Haven't read many of these this year as I mostly do issues...

Best Writer: Charles Soule. He has been writing so top quality Comic-Book scripts this year.

Best Artist: Fiona Staples (Saga) or Aaron Kruder (Action Comics) or Frank Quitely (Multiversity: Pax Americana.)

Best Writer & Artist: Can't think of anyone who does both that I've been reading in the past year.

Best Inker: Flicking through the Comics of 2014 I have to hand, it seems that all the titles I have do not have an inker, but are only credited to the artist and colourist and letterer.

Best Colourist: Wil Quintana for his beyond brilliant colour work in recent issues of Action Comics, espeically Action Comics #37. (I'd also like to say here that currently the colourists at DC are far better than those at Marvel.)

    Best Letterer: erm... DC Lettering.

Breakthrough Talent of 2014: Gillen McKelvie and Wilson Cowles (The Wicked and The Divine.)

BEST NEW HERO or HERO TEAM (debut in 2014): The Falcon as Captain America
BEST NEW VILLAIN or VILLAIN TEAM (debut in 2014): The Furies ( Earth 2, Earth 2: World’s End )
BEST NEW COMIC (first issue shipped in 2014): The Multiversity
BEST LIMITED SERIES (last issue shipped in 2014): Superman Unchained
BEST CLIFFHANGER/MOMENT: Superman ‘jokerized’ at end of Batman #35
BEST STORYLINE (within a series or across multiple series): Gothtopia ( Batman books )
BEST SLEEPER/SURPRISE HIT: Iron Fist, The Living Weapon
BEST ONGOING COMIC (need not have begun publication in 2014): Daredevil
BEST GRAPHIC ALBUM (OGN or COLLECTION): Thanos, The Infinity Revelation
    BEST WRITER: Charles Soule ( She-Hulk )
BEST ARTIST: Phil Noto ( Black Widow )
    BEST WRITER/ARTIST: Walter Simonson ( Ragnarok )
BEST INKER: Wade Von Grawbadger ( All-New Captain America )
BEST COLOR ARTIST: FCO Plascencia ( Batman – Year Zero )
    BEST LETTERER: Troy Peteri, C.O.W.L.
BREAKTHROUGH TALENT OF 2014: Kaare Andrews ( Iron Fist, The Living Weapon )
  • BEST NEW HERO or HERO TEAM (debut in 2014): Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan is, quite simply, a breath of fresh air. Her youthful exuberance makes each and every appearance she has a joy to read.)

BEST NEW VILLAIN or VILLAIN TEAM (debut in 2014): The Inheritors (while Morlun is not new, his family is. And Spider-Verse has made them a threat to be reckoned with)

BEST NEW COMIC (first issue shipped in 2014): Ms. Marvel. See above.

BEST LIMITED SERIES (last issue shipped in 2014): Edge of Spider-verse (Marvel gathered together some of the best talents in comics today to present us with their take on the Spider-Man character. And, excluding issue 4, it worked beautifully. David Hine, Jason Latour, Dustin Weaver, and Gerard Way, all on one mini? Magic.)

BEST CLIFFHANGER/MOMENT: The reveal of Old Nick Fury in Original Sin #4 (I've been reading this via the Marvel Unlimited App, and I can safely say that this is a retcon I look forward to being completely explained.)

BEST STORYLINE (within a series or across multiple series): The Great Society vs. The New Avengers - New Avengers Vol 3, issues 16.NOW-21 (It's the closest we'll ever come to Hickman's Avengers versus the JLA. And this JLA analog was written better than New 52's Justice League.)

BEST SLEEPER/SURPRISE HIT: Spider-Man 2099 (I am painfully uninitiated with Spider-Man 2099, but I was surprised by just how much I love the new comic. And Peter David is terrific, as usual.)

BEST ONGOING COMIC (need not have begun publication in 2014): Avengers/New Avengers (I need to put them together, because you can't have one without the other. And this year has made that even more apparent.)

    Runner Up: Chew

BEST GRAPHIC ALBUM (OGN or COLLECTION): Attack on Titan, Volume 12 (a turning point for the series, which layered a new level of political intrigue along with the science fiction element of the series.)

Runner Up: Ms. Marvel, Vol 1

BEST WRITER: Dan Slott (Superior Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man, Spiderverse, Silver Surfer...I think that all speaks for itself. What a year, man.)
    Runner Up: Jonathan Hickman

BEST ARTIST: Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals. So good. So so good.)
    Runner Up:

BEST WRITER/ARTIST: Jeremy Dale (Skyward, for obvious reasons. RIP Jeremy.)

BEST INKER: David Marquez (Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man had to be on my list in some fashion, and here's as good a place to put it as any. Marquez inks himself, and does it flawlessly. One of the better drawn comics on the stands.)

Runner Up: Wade Von Grawbadger (All-New X-Men)

BEST COLOR ARTIST: Fiona Staples (Saga; most people go right to the art of Saga, but it's the coloring that makes it so damn gorgeous for me. And Fiona colors herself excellent.)

BEST LETTERER: Todd Klein (Fables. Fables is regularly the best lettered comic in comics today.)

BREAKTHROUGH TALENT OF 2014: G. Willow Wilson (talk about a breakout year. Ms. Marvel is one of the biggest sleeper hits at Marvel, and now in 2015, she has X-Men (both the current book and a new one on the way), AND she was part of the Marvel Retreat, meaning there's a lot more to come form her!)

    Runner Up: Babs Tarr

Noticing that there is one name not appearing on breakthrough talent that I think warrants noting (and I will be casting my vote for): James Tynion IV (Batman, Batman: Eternal, The Woods, Memetic). Everything he has touched jumps to the top of my stack, and not because I notice his name, but because I can't wait for the next issues of the books he is on. It took me until mid-August to put his name and these books all together. Just my humble opinion.

Weird year when these two happen... yes! And I agree with them at least getting nominated. What a value the book was as I heard it usually a couple weeks after reading it, being "read aloud", voice-acted really, with crazy impersonations by the writers themselves!
