Recommend me some books from the new Valiant!

Picked up Ivar, Timewalker #1 the other day on a whim because it looked sufficiently Doctor Who-like and absolutely loved it. It made me think I've maybe been a bit too hasty to dismiss the revived Valiant line (mostly because I was never a big fan of the originals... what I read back then was alright but nothing really wowed me). So now I come to you all looking for recommendations. What's good?

The Valiant, Quantum and Woody and Archer and Armstrong are some of my favorites.

Next time there's a Valiant sale on Comixology, I want to pick up some of their stuff. I've been hearing good things about them.

Back in the 90's I collected the first go-round of ALL the Valiant books... probably the first 4-5 issues, but didn't care for them. One day I was in a comic shop and saw the outrageous prices on them (they were only a few months old!) so I asked the owner if he would be interested in buying mine. Yes. So I came back the next day with my very small stack of books and walked out of there $500+ richer!

And then the comic scene imploded...

  • The number one book I would recommend from the new Valiant is Joshua Dysart's Harbinger #1-25. The art by Khari Evans wasn't my favorite but the story, scripting and characterizations are second to none. Likewise Archer and Armstrong 1-25 by Fred Van Lente is VERY good. Bloodshot is above average but not on par with the others I mentioned. X-O Manowar was an interesting read, for me the main protagonist was so unlikable it made the early issues suffer in my opinion, but as he matured he grew on me and I look back on the series as a whole as being pretty good. Shadowman showed promise for 2 or 3 issues but then degenerated into dreck, I'd avoid it. Unity has been a pleasant read as well. Some people love Quantum and Woody but it is only average or slightly below for me, it has it's moments, but i dropped it and don't miss it. Rai is stellar, especially the art. Ditto with the recently completed Dr Mirage. The best thing was a few months ago when Humble Bundle had a Valiant sale it was like 30+ TPB basically covering all the new VEI stuff to that point and the Masters editions of the old stuff for $25 bucks. If you have any specific questions I'd be more than happy to answer them. Also you can go watch the Harbinger episode of my Vlog on Youtube if you'd like, just search for The Comic Source.

All of it. I'm loving Valiant right now. As already mentioned the recent Humble Bundle got me hooked.

My particular favourite is Bloodshot. But Archer and Armstrong, Harbinger and X-O Manowar are also great. Quantum and Woody is a great funny book. Shadowman is your book if you like mystical, magical side of things, but wasn't my favourite. I'd also steer clear of Rai, a book I just didn't like.

You've picked a good time to get into things though with Valiant Next just getting going. You should just go back and pick up The Valiant mini which the first two are now out and where amazing. I'm also pre ordering Divinity, Ninjak and Bloodshot Reborn. But anything with the Valiant Next banner on I'm sure is worth a try and a natural jumping on point.

I've been enjoying pretty much all of it. The exception being the Quantum & Woody and Delinquents titles. I'm still getting them, but immediately passing them along to a friend that is enjoying them.

X-O has been a solid title from the beginning and has shown a tremendous amount of character growth in my estimation. The Unity title has been similar.
