Spider-Gwen

Has anyone read Spider-Gwen #1?

I have not read it, but I am REALLY digging the cover and costume design... I just wanted to share all the kickass visuals!

I love the web pattern INSIDE the costume!

It really is an excellent design.

And I suppose with Spider-Sense, peripheral vision is unnecessary.

    OK.

I just read her origin on Wikipedia.

    Who made her webshooters?

    Or am I overthinking?

There is no crying in baseball (or so I am told).

And there is no overthinking in comic book fandom.

    Whew!

I was afraid I'd been doing it wrong all these years.

Flipped through the first issue at my LCS. Passed.
I'm not interested in another alternate dimension version of Spidey and another "reimagining" of his supporting cast and rogues gallery. Tough to beat the glory of the previous Spider-Girl run. We've already got the recently launched Spider-Woman series and the 1st issue of Silk was really good.

    But that costume is fantastic.

    ???

I don't understand that sentiment at all.

    How is that lame?

yeah i should redact that statement
i shoudl reserver judgement until i actually read the book
i just thought itd be cooler if it was somehow on earth 616
  • I read it last night. I picked it up because I'm friends with Jason and I've loved Robbi’s art for several years. I would recommend reading the Spider-Verse mini-series first. I didn't and I felt like I was playing catch-up the whole issue. So it wasn't as strong a first issue as I was hoping, but I see a lot of potential. The artwork is gorgeous, the world is interesting (lots of familiar faces in very different roles), and I really like that Gwen is/was a drummer in a band led by Mary Jane—and there's an actual song called “Face it, Tiger” performed by Married with Sea Monsters under the band name The Mary Janes.

So while I think this first issue is a little choppy story-wise, I'm going to give it a few issues to settle in before I decide whether to carry on or drop it.

I am rather confused about Dan Slott creating so many interesting alternative timelines at the same time as Jonathan Hickman is blowing them up.

I don't think Slott was creating any new timelines or parallel dimension, I think he was just digging up obscure existing ones. The most recent issue of Amazing Spider-Man (#15) references Hickman's convergence. Fits in nicely too.

That song is pretty damn awesome. Thanks for the heads up.

  • Slott came up with “a world where Gwen Stacy gets bitten by the spider instead of Peter,” but Jason did all the world-building and backstory.
  • Picked this up at a Con to see what all the hype is about. I love the idea of the character and her costume is cool, but... it just felt like a female peter parker. It was good, nothing special. Hopefully it gets better, but right now its just over rated

Just read the second issue. Muuuch better than the first. And an awesome way to use Spider-Ham.

Loving this book so far. I'm especially impressed that in a comics world where we're presented with different versions of familiar characters it doesn't feel like a parade of "Oh, and here's this version of __________".

She looks either pissed or possessed in that last image. I'm not reading the book, so maybe she has a Penance Stare & demonstrating.

Argh! I wasn't planning on getting this past issue #1. But Spider-Ham!?!? now I'll HAVE to get at least issue #2.

I'm not much into cosplay, but that is pretty damn impressive that someone can whip together such an accurate reproduction of a comic book outfit. Kudos to those ladies! And Spider-Gwen, does have the BEST costume in recent years.

Anyone notice the band posters in the background of one of the panels in this issue advertising the Mary James rival band, 'The Black Cats'? BRILLIANT

Yep, I expect/want a Scott Pilgrim-style battle of the bands before long.
