Irwin Hasen passed away last night at the remarkable age of 96. He was best know for his
Dondi newspaper strip, and for his work for DC back in the ’40s, primarily “Green Lantern” and “Wildcat,” which he co-created with Bill Finger.
Irwin was as colorful a character as the heroes he drew. He was probably the shortest professional cartoonist to ever lift a brush, but he made up for it with the size of his personality. He was a longtime regular at Heroes Con, which is where I met him. I still have a nice Wildcat colored marker sketch he drew.
He didn't always get the attention he deserved, even at Heroes Con, which holds its artists in the highest esteem, but I never saw him get down about it. The last time I saw him was last October at the NY Comic Con screening of a short documentary on his life. It was great to see him surrounded by a room full of fans celebrating his career. I'm glad he received that last hurrah.
