Valiant Movie Deal | Worthy Competition for DC & Marvel Studios?

Valiant Announces $100 Million+ Deal to Make Superhero Movies from China

Expect some speculation on those Bloodshot back-issues soon. Not to mention Shadowman and Archer & Armstrong. Anyone have any thoughts on this major announcement? I think we may begin seeing a sales bump for Valiant in the coming months.

  • As a new Valiant Fan I think it's great! I think people don't give some of their characters a shot because they aren't part of the more well known companies. But once you pick up a few issues of Archer and Armstrong, Bloodshot or Harbinger in my opinion it's hard not to get hooked, because they are good quality books. I hope to continue to see them grow and to see them on either my television or the movies soon! Something like this could easily bump up prices on back issues.

If they can maintain the quality of the books when translated to film, this could be a really good thing. The Valiant books have been a consistently good read since their return with few exceptions - Q&W is not my cup of tea.

I think this will be the main factor. I'm always glad to see indie publishers get more attention. My only hope is that the attention they receive is from people who love the projects and really want to bring them to life.

As far as prices on back issues go, I think this will just be one more occasion that will separate the good retailers from the rest of the pack.

To answer the question... I hope so.

Valiant were at the LSCC Saturday and had a panel, I actually asked them about this deal and was pleased to hear that their main focus is still producing quality comics. I'm loving these Valiant books right now and that's great to hear that the books aren't going to be impacted by this deal.

I think someone like Bloodshot would be the perfect lead into this universe. The potentials are great.

I think the fact Valiant are happy to play with the status quo of the characters so much will bring something new and unexpected to comic book movies. I'm excited to see where this deals goes.

Without offense to Valiant, I hardly think they qualify as an indie publisher -- they're another publisher, period. They're a corporate publishing concern. An indie publisher is two guys squeezing nickels together (well, one of the two, anyway) and working out of an attic over a German delicatessen. I should know, having experienced the latter.

You make it sound like working over a German delicatessen is a bad thing.

Now I want a bierkugel and edamer on pumpernickel sandwich, extra mittelscarf.

Indie was a poor choice of words on my part. I simply meant that it's nice to see a publisher other than Marvel and DC receive cross-media attention for a change.

When Wes Anderson finally gets around to making a claymation Milk & Cheese film, THEN I will use the word "indie."

No worries. I got what you meant just the same, and I agree with you.

Today, Valiant is announcing a five-picture deal with Sony Pictures to bring two of its series, Bloodshot and Harbinger to the big screen starting in 2017.

Both will receive two feature films each before a fifth movie, Harbinger Wars, based on the 2013 comic series, brings both together. A number of other Valiant properties are currently in development, including odd-couple action comedy Archer & Armstrong and a supernatural thriller featuring Shadowman. As mentioned earlier in this thread, Valiant received funding from DMG Entertainment in March for feature and television development, which teased development of properties for both the U.S. and China markets, including Chinese-language publishing and animation as well as movies.

Interesting... I've been reading X-O Manowar (and Unity 1-4) thanks to a recent Comixology sale. I just joined SCRIBD so I'm looking forward to reading more Valiant comics that way. Bloodshot and Harbinger are definitely on my list.

Bloodshot is to be directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, (who brought us the film 'John Wick'). The screenplay is being written by Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) and Eric Heisserer (The Thing remake), and is being produced by Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, & X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Neal Moritz (the Fast and Furious franchise).

    Impressive.
