long term storage

For a collection, is a long box with boards and bags really the best way to store comics long term? Is standing upright really good for paper? It seems to me like it shouldn't be.

I'm looking to start a collection of the silver age Justice League of America and of course the really expensive issues will be in CGC covers but for everything else, what is the optimal way to store them?

I stored my silver age collection bagged/boarded in short boxes. Pack them tightly, but not so tight that you start bending issues. This will keep them fairly air-tight and easy to move around. Short box will hold about 150 issues. Comics should be stored vertically, not horizontally. They have a tendency to roll when stacked flat and the stack gets too high.

Thanks for the advice. Something about stacking vertically feels wrong to me, but if the collective wisdom says it's best, that is what I'll do.
