Dan Spiegle Has Passed Away at 96

Mark Evanier just announced that artist Dan Spiegle passed away last Saturday. Spiegle was an underappeciated artist. He wasn’t one of the greats, but he did a lot of really nice work during his long career. I first saw his work in a Gold Key Scooby-Doo comic as a very young lad—it was one of the first comics I owned, and it stood out to me even then as being better than the cartoons. I wish I still had it, but it fell apart from repeated reading. I may start trying to track those issues down.

Yep, I think his Blackhawk stuff might be the best work of his career. (Though I do love his Scooby-Doo.)

Through doing the Action Comics Weekly Podcast, I've become more familiar with Dan Spiegle actually quite recently. In the Action Comics Weekly series Dan did the art for the Secret Six stories (at least of what I've read so far). And I've gotta tell you, I love the man's work. I wanted to hunt him down for my "interviews" portion of the show I hope to do and now...obviously, it's too late.

Man, Spiegle was one of my favorite artists of all time. I have been in love with his style since I bought the Clash of the Titans and Black Hole adaptations. His Blackhawk series is in my top 5 runs ever. I had no idea he was 96. I will miss his work.
