She’s been slowly building her resumé the past three or four years, but this year she really expanded her presence in the marketplace with some higher profile books.
My plan of using the reading threads to refresh my memory on all the things I read this year worked perfectly.

BREAKTHROUGH TALENT OF 2018 - Bryan Edward Hill (I strongly considered Donny Cates and Vita Ayala for this, too, but since Bryan made advances in both comics and comics TV (Titans), I chose him.)
This year, my choices tend to be a bit more “Independent”. Mostly due to the status of both the Marvel and DC Universes. I lament that DC has simultaneously paid lip service to their history, but then completely ignored it for the purposes of their publishing over the course of the past few years. I love the idea of the 52 Earths, but without regularly seeing the goodness that we saw so briefly during Multiversity/Convergence (e.g., their Thunderworld/Shazam! books with the Shazam!/Marvel Family and their Legion & Titans books, as well - some real good stuff that could've been expounded upon. The current "Shazam!" version need not apply). I am, however, warming up to the Marvel Universe again, since they're bringing back the FF and have continued to bring the funny in their West Coast Avengers and Squirrel Girl books. On to the fun part:
BEST NEW HERO or HERO TEAM (debut in 2018)
* I'll speak up when something as great as Invincible or The Unstoppable Wasp comes up again.
BEST NEW VILLAIN or VILLAIN TEAM (debut in 2018)
*
BEST NEW COMIC (first issue shipped in 2018)
THE UNSTOPPABLE WASP, which counts only because they re-started the series recently. Great book!
BEST LIMITED SERIES (last issue shipped in 2018)
INVINCIBLE, hands down. Since it ended, this is now a limited series (although, an extremely long one). This series was such a watershed in so many ways and I can't begin to express how wonderful it was to find myself feeling refreshed and excited over a brand-new superhero series as I reached my 40s. One of the best comics series of all time.
BEST SINGLE ISSUE OR ONE-SHOT
USAGI YOJIMBO: THE HIDDEN #7 - while I knew this was the ending that was coming, it was great to enjoy the ride toward it and the last book was as good as the first. Stan Sakai always turns in excellent work.
BEST CLIFFHANGER/MOMENT
MAGE: THE HERO DENIED #12 - The Wizard Returns (an alternate title so I don't give spoilers - I was sooooo glad to see this character again).
BEST STORYLINE (within a series or across multiple series)
MAGE: THE HERO DENIED. Since you're not delineating that this needs to have concluded, I want to - once again - tout this excellent book.
BEST SLEEPER/SURPRISE HIT
*
BEST ONGOING COMIC (need not have begun publication in 2018)
KURT BUSIEK'S ASTRO CITY is and has always been my choice in this category. While many of attempted to swipe its fresh ideas concerning living in a world with superheroes, Astro City continues to bring a fresh perspective to the medium. I am, however, saddened that I have no idea when his team may publish the first OGN version of this title.
BEST GRAPHIC ALBUM (OGN or COLLECTION)
BLACK HAMMER: THE EVENT
BEST WRITER
KURT BUSIEK, ASTRO CITY - 'nuff said.
BEST ARTIST
STAN SAKAI, USAGI YOJIMBO - same.
BEST WRITER/ARTIST
JIM STARLIN, if for no other reason than that one of the biggest films of the year was based entirely upon his work/creations. (For reference, he published not only his last Thanos book with Marvel, but also two books through Ominous Press, his self-publishing company, and even a Marvel print of Thanos fighting Captain Mar-Vell, Adam Warlock, the Thing, and the three main Avengers)

BREAKTHROUGH TALENT OF 2018

* If there was one that really impressed me, I'd remember it. Can't think of one.
** I can't pretend that I pay enough attention to really say who's who with enough accuracy to be fair in this category.
