Custom Sketch Gift Advice

I have a ladyfriend, and I'd like to get her a custom sketch for her birthday (something Avengery, maybe, though I am not sure yet). I've never done this, and I was wondering if anyone had advice. What's the best day to do this? Convention? Etsy? Any and all advice would be welcome, thanks!

Do you have an artist in mind or do you mean in general? If you do, contact them directly and ask about a gift commission. If you mean more general, then I'd guess you could hunt around sites like etsy or deviantart for an artist that you dig their style. Here, myself and a few others are artists. I think a fair number of artist's would let you let her pick her own sketch and then let you pay. Normally, it goes by how many figures are requested or any other/special requests when it comes to price. You'll get more value for money from lesser-known artists, but if she has a favorite artist and that matters to you/her then even a simpler piece from them may mean more.

Peruse the boards a bit and you'll find various forumites taking commissions. Most of them will have links or scans of some of their other work so you can figure out whose style best fits what you're going for or the type of art that she likes.
