Dave Cockrum came up with the costume and design, and was the co-plotter of Uncanny X-Men 101, which was the first story of the Phoenix. I don't see Big Dave's name there anywhere.
John Byrne and Steven Grant both suggested to Claremont that Jean turn evil, and Byrne designed the Dark Phoenix costume. Byrne co-plotted the story of the Dark Phoneix (and drew in the sequence that Jean had to die for which was not in the plot. Byrne also drew the "Jean dies" ending without Claremont's input according to the interviews I have read about Shooter's mandate.
Chris is a hell of a talent, but to say that they are "his" without mention of the co-creators burns my ass.
