Looking to go outside my comic book comfort zone...

After trying out some of the New 52 DC stuff, I thought a bunch of the books were good, but I'm still bothered by the fact that it's such a huge universe, and I'll never get the complete story, and it seems they're just going to keep getting their continuity screwed up.

So now I'm thinking of trying out some Dark Horse of Viz manga. Why those two publishers in particular? Because they have very reasonably priced digital options. 70 pages of "Dark Horse Presents" is $4. 120 pages of "One Piece" is $5.

I'm also looking into Red Circle comics or maybe the new Transformers books.

I'm open to other publishers too, but I do want to try to get three specific things:

1. A lot of bang for my comic buck.

2. A complete universe in one or two titles.

3. Something that's not too graphic or mature. I'm burned out on dark and bloody stuff.

So, can anyone recommend me their favorite indy stuff, perhaps based on my criteria?

I was gonna say Saga from image but your #3 rules that out.

    How about Hypernaturals from Boom?

not sure if Viz is offering it thru their online, but Bakuman is a great read. About 2 kids who want to break into Manga, its a great view into a very different comic book culture and publishing world. It is self-contained, but it feels like it has lots of different genres in it (since the manga authors write a range of stories). Its not graphic or adult in any way, in fact some may see it as kind of being childish or starry-eyed towards the comic book/manga industry.

I like Buffy and Angel & Faith from Dark Horse, but if you're not a Buffy fan originally it probably wouldn't hold much for you.

It's probably borderline on your 3rd rule but I don't think it would be too bad.

I'm also looking forward to Victories from Dark Horse but I believe I've heard that it would step all over the line for rule 3.

Good luck and if you find something new and good please let us know.

I actually JUST saw Hypernaturals mentioned somewhere else. Must've flew under my radar.

Funny, Bukuman is the ONE manga I already tried from Viz, almost a year ago. I got it on sale, and never got around to reading all of it. I'll try and check it out tonight.

I actually think Victories looks super cool. I might check it out.

When I say mature, I just don't want Garth Ennis level stuff.

Not long from now, all that will stand between you and evil are the Victories—six heroes sworn to protect us from crime, corruption, and the dark. As one member cracks down on the violence, he discovers himself touched by a painful past through the psychic powers of Link. Will this trauma cause him to self-destruct or continue the fight?

Try some of the Naoki Urasawa/Viz Signature stuff, like 20th Century Boys, Monster, and Pluto. Re: Dark Horse, I hope you are reading Hellboy and B.P.R.D. Mind MGMT is also mind-blowing at this point. Try the Massive also. Lots of good stuff there not involving tights.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not at all against superhero stuff. In fact, I wish there were more non-big two options that weren't overly graphic.
