Just saw this was released. Looks good. I'll have to break out the Absolute Edition to reread it.

    SWEET!!!

The Dark Knight Returns animated segment from The Animated Batman series was always my favorite, now I get to see a complete movie of it.

  • I have never read The Dark Knight Returns, should I before I get the blu ray?

You should, regardless of whether or not you get the DVD. It's that much of a classic.

I have now watched it 3 times and still during some scenes I get goosebumps. My only complaint is I wish they had kept in some of Batman's inner monologues.

You absolutely should. Or at least get it to go along with your viewing. It might be interesting if you watch the DVD *before* you head into the book. Part of Miller's writing is putting you in the headspace of the character being featured, and that was absent from the DVD. I'd say many of us who started out with the book were "filling in the blanks" during pivotal scenes (I know I was!), so it'd be interesting to hear how someone liked (or didn't like) it when approaching it from the other angle.

Me too, as mentioned above. I was impressed they managed to put Don and Rob in there, though. :)

Yeah I wonder how this film will play to someone that hasn't read the comic. Thinking about showing it to my 10 year old cousin next time I see him. He loved the Year One animated film.

Comixology just had a sale on DK, DKR, and Year One. I snagged all three even though I've got physical copies; DK and Year One, because they're just fantastic and DKR because, what the hell? I read DKR when it came out and that was without reading DK, so I'm interested to see what its like. I just read through the first half of DK to refresh before the film... and the film was excellently done! A little weird not hearing Batman's inner monologue, but as @Torchsong said, you kind of fill that stuff in yourself. Another win for DC animation.
  • probably going to pick this up when i can find it on sale on amazon or something on bluray....def want to see it, just bought the trade for the first time last month and haven't read it yet.

I thought they did a great job of bring this story to video and I give it a 4 out of 5

I agree the lack of he inner monologue was disappointing, and the video did suffer from it not being included. Not enough for me not recommend DKR to other people. What really disappointed me was the animation style, it felt a little too clean for this story. One of the great thing of the comic was how gritty the art was and how it matched the story.

I would say watch the movie first. Then read the comic.

Good point about the animation looking too clean. I have watched it 6 times now. 3 times on DVD and 2 times on Blu ray. And it looks amazing on Blu.

  • Think I'll wait for Part 2 to be released before I see Part 1.

thought i was being lazy by not going to redbox to rent this and then buy it when they release both of them together, but apparently it's not out at redbox yet

I wish I had done that. But I didn't know there was gonna be a year gap between the releases. I figured 6 months tops.

Picked up DNK pt2 and it was just as good as the first part... as you would expect. ;)

The funny thing was I had to go to two different stores because the first was sold out and the Target that I did find it was almost sold out. Hopefully this is a good sign that the popularity of the DC animation is still going strong.

I grabbed the Blu/DVD combo pack of it the other day. And watched Part 2 this morning. AMAZING!!! Read DKR when it was coming out I was 12 and been waiting 26 years for a film version. And the one I finally got was almost perfect.
  • Guess I'll add both parts to my Netflix list.

I thought it was pretty good. Wouldve worked better without the delay between parts. I think Pt2 took too long to show batman. I think some unfamiliar with the book might find some of it odd or even silly? Wish the box art wouldve been more reminiscent of the graphic novel and or they shouldve meshed together or matched somehow IMO. showed me things id forgotten and things I missed or didnt remember. Some things didnt work as well as I remember but a cool watch.
