Warner Brothers Wants ‘Batman’ Reboot To Hit Theaters In 2016

(latino-review.com) It turns out Warner Bros. really wants to reboot the Batman franchise, and it all might be happening sooner than you think. Even after Christopher Nolan’s fantastic ending, the studio wants the Caped Crusader to return to the big screen in just four short years.

Cosmic Books News is reporting that Warner Bros. wants the new Batman movie to follow the Justice League movie (tentative release date for that is 2015). However, this reboot won’t be another origin story (like The Amazing Spider-Man), instead it’ll focus on Batman’s second year as a hero. The film may be titled The Batman.

But wait, there’s more details. This new Batman “will be part of the same shared DC Universe that features the Justice League Movie as well as having Henry Cavill in the role of Superman in Justice League and subsequent sequels to the Man of Steel.”

It’s definitely way too soon to even be talking about a reboot, but the details sound somewhat promising. One of the things that The Amazing Spider-Man got wrong was retelling the origin story. (How many times must we see Uncle Ben die, seriously?) Batman’s origin story has been told and retold so it’ll be interesting to see something else… but in a decade or two. 2016 seems like way too soon.

    Interesting.

I wish Warner would name a "comic movie czar". Someone with ties to, and respect for the source material that would oversee the development of this new DCmovieU. That would generate some faith in me for what they have planned. As it stands now I have very little.

Yeah it's too soon, but I want more Batman and if Nolan is out I don't think I'd want someone else doing his Batman so I can live with a reboot.

There's so many different versions of Batman out there that you can even not consider it a reboot, just another Batman story.

I concur it's too soon for a reboot. On the other hand I can't fault WB for making another movie. Billion dollar movies are hard to come by, so making another one isn't completely unexpected.

I'm ready for a fresh take on Batman in a little afraid they may be rushing the "shared universe" a bit but what the heck throw it at the wall and let's see what sticks.

I can't wait for a new interpretation. Take it seriously and treat it with respect is all I ask. I've enjoyed most everything to date to varying degrees, but I've personally yet to see MY idea of batman represented on screen.

Nolan said he wanted three movies and that's what he did if he said six movies instead then another movie would be coming out in 2016 probably. The best thing is no origin. No issue with 2016 for me.

I'd rather a reboot than someone else take over what Nolan has done, especially with the way he told the story. There will always be a Batman in the theatres, for as long as Batman in the theatres is a moneymaking business.

Just, please. Let's not see the falling pearls again. Much like there is no carbon based lifeform that doesn't know that Spider-Man was bitten by a radioactive spider, everybody knows Batman's origin. Tell a Batman story that involves him fighting bad guys. We don't need to wait an hour to get him into the damned suit!

I say this knowing full well that they can't resist, and that we're going to be seeing the origin AGAIN.

That's what Geoff Johns does. That's his gig as Chief Creative Officer. It worked well with the last couple of seasons of Smallville, and less well with the Green Lantern movie (though I expect there were a lot of hands in that game before he was brought in in his new capacity).

After Nolan's run, it'll be hard for me to embrace a new Batman. If they do a reboot with an origin, I'm out until the 2nd movie (same reason I'm not wasting the time at the theatre for Amazing Spider-man.)

I definitely do not want anyone to crowbar into Nolan's universe. I hope they continue the darker theme, I'd even settle for theme like Batman Forever. If its Batman & Robin (with too many characters & no dark tones) I'm out.

  • The problem is the billion dollar behemoth known as the Avengers... that movie's success has spurred Warner Bros. on to make a JLA movie, and cash in on the superhero craze ASAP. Can't have Justice League without Batman.

If I say that I want Batman to be lighter that is somewhere between the camp of West/Schumacher and how heavy DKR was. Not cartoony but super-heroes. Maybe like Captain America mix?
  • Reread the original post and realized that because the JL movie will have continuity with at least 2 other movies, the Superman one and this Batman one, that Man of Steel comes out 2013, then JL 2015, then The Batman 2016, this puts Superman front and center. What about the other movies that I've read are in development? Where do they fit in?

    I actually agree with you.

And if this all goes down, I'd like to see an unused Bat-villain.

What's the time limit on it being "too soon?" I say bring on a less bleak Batman with Robin ASAP.

I think if they'd tweek the DD movie suit & used it as the basis for a new batsuit it'll probably be a better compromise. I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if it's a spandex suit.

i think thats a great idea. i heard Loeb (on Word balloon i think) talking about how terrible the DD costume was and i totally disagree. of all the problems that movie had i don't think the costume was one of them. (Heck, i don't even blame Ben Affleck for the problems that movie had. I believe terrible Mark Stephen Johnson bears that burden 100%) i thought that was a perfect real world adaptation of a comic costume.

If that's the case then I hope Johns has learned his lesson and they keep things simple.

Agreed. I'd like to see some version of black and grey. Doesn't have to be realistic I can suspend belief as long as its not spandex.

I don't think Johns has as much input as we think he has. We know he had some input in Green Lantern, but remember that LA Times article from last month that talked about the future of DC films?

    LA Times

It says that while Johns has consulted on some of the movies, sources close to the films say he played no role in the TDKR and MOS. Seeing as how they've only produced 3 films since the creation of DC Entertainment, (when Johns got the position) he's really only consulted on 1 movie.

Even before reading that article, I kinda figured he didn't have much input in the 2 movies. While Green Lantern was in production, he was always tweeting about the filming and talking about it in interviews. I haven't heard much of anything from him regarding TDKR and MOS. That tells me he wasn't that involved.
  • From that LA Times article, maybe Jeff Robinov could be the "comic movie czar" that was talked about way above, by rebis on August 3.
