The 2018 Reading Thread - The Extreme Ultimate Edition - March

A tradition unlike any other! Time for the March reading thread.

The rules as laid down by the great and powerful Torchsong are simple:

Log everything you've read this year. Just edit your existing post or you (and we) will get confused trying to keep up. At the end of each month I'll start a new thread and you can pick a "winner" from your favorite books. You can focus on just trades (which is usually what I do), or just write about the good stuff you've read.

January Winner: The Amazing Spiderman Omnibus vol 2
February Winner: The Walking Dead Compendium vol 2

    March list.
Life has beaten into submission and I can't even do something clever with my list name

    Indestructible Hulk #6-8
Batman The Dark Prince Charming book 1
    Claws (digital)

America (digital) - I want to take a moment. This was not good. As I read this all I could think is some Disney executive was looking over his kids shoulder and started reading the dialogue, then told Axel to GTFO and don't let the door hit you. I wanted to like this book, but ugh.

This felt like a return to greatness for Don Lomax. I have long been a huge fan of this book, but the series of mini-series after the initial 16-issue run were never as engaging, to me. With this volume, Lomax returned to telling single-issue stories that might bleed into the next issue, or later issues, allowing for an ingrained continuity necessary for this book, but which never felt like "part 1" or "part 2" of a longer story. I don't know if it's how I read it or how Lomax might approach such storytelling differently, but this collection (and the follow-up Second Series that is being serialized on comixology through Caliber Press) worked so well, in my opinion. It was exciting to see a series I truly loved raise the bar back to where it once was. BUY! BUY! BUY! BUY! BUY!

Are Indy comics good? I have always been interested, but for whatever reason never picked up any.

    Horizon 1-17

I’m glad your enjoying horizon. I read the first two trades and really enjoyed them. I also love east of west, but it’s such a slow burn that I find that I have to read it in trade to really appreciate it.
  • @mwhitt80 Sorry, I missed your post before.

The Indy comics are pretty enjoyable (the Dark Horse ones from the 90s are the ones I just read). But there was a lot of nostalgia for me, as well, as I read them when they were first published. The "villains" always seem to be similar bands of marauders in desert situations, which can be problematic, but if you're looking for further Indiana Jones adventures, you can't go wrong checking them out. I got them through the library, which I would recommend.

Horizon was solid - that 3rd trade you've yet to read is the last one, sadly - but I found it confusing at times. I'm not sure I'd have stuck with it if I'd been reading as it went along.

Good to know. I'm going to try to track down some of the old Omnibus then. I remember them and played all the video games, but never got the comics.
