The Music Thread

I'd say it's a safe bet we all dig music in some form. A lot of us like to listen while we create or read these funnybooks. Rather than the usual "What's your favorite?" lists or "Desert Island?" topics, let's go a bit different:

1) What's a song from the past year (2011-Present) that you've really enjoyed?
2) What band/artist have you recently "discovered" that you like?
3) What was the last CD (actual physical media) that you bought?
4) What was the last mp3 (or single file audio track) that you bought/downloaded?
5) What are you looking forward to - music-wise - in 2012?

    To answer my own question:

    1) "Heading Back to NYC" - Joan Armatrading. Great little opening riff and a fun bassline that sets the tone for it. I found myself humming this one quite a bit over the past year.
    2) The Decemberists - Hooked me in with "The Rake's Song" and I've been checking out track after track by them and enjoying what I've been hearing.
    3) For myself - Megadeth Anthology (2-disc set). Of all the speed-metal bands I always felt Megadeth had the best riffs and talent behind it, even if Mustaine is...well...Mustaine. For the wife - The Skyrim Soundtrack. Great music to listen to while you're doing whatever it is you're doing.
    4) "Surrender" by Angels and Airwaves. This is the band I wish I'd created when I was still playing. They are the sound I'd always hoped to create.
    5) New albums from my favorite band - Marillion - and a new Joan Armatrading album (and hopefully tour!!!)

@Torchsong. I have tried The Decemberists, I really have. I just don't get it. And I do want to like them, but I just can't get into them.

    1. "Beloved" by April Smith and the Great Picture Show. It swells and I find quite poignant.

    2. See above, The band did the song for the Valspar commerical, "Colors," and check out their album, "Songs for a Sinking Ship" Great album all around.

    3. Def Leppard's Vault: 1985-1995. Best band growing up for me.

    4. "Elvis Presley Blues" by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (going to see them live Apr. 27th, whoo-hoo!)

    5. Checking out Bruce Springstreen's new songs, maybe. For me I tend to just go with the flow and let new music come to me. Podcasts take up too much of my listening time to really get serious about music.

I'm gonna come off as such an old fart here.

    1) What's a song from the past year (2011-Present) that you've really enjoyed?
Nothing. Since the advent of AutoTune, I avoid pop music like unto the plague.

    2) What band/artist have you recently "discovered" that you like?
    The Carolina Chocolate Drops

    3) What was the last CD (actual physical media) that you bought?
    The remastered White Album

    4) What was the last mp3 (or single file audio track) that you bought/downloaded?
Also The Beatles; A Hard Day's Night (only had it on vinyl)

    5) What are you looking forward to - music-wise - in 2012?
    The demise of AutoTune.

    1. I can't really answer this. I can't keep up on new music.
    2. Rodrigo y Gabriela
    3. The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac, a two disc set that I had to replace after one of the discs shattered.
    4. A bunch of Supertramp songs
    5. No idea.

Interesting that so many people have the same issue I did with #1. The fact that my favorite "recent" song is from a woman in her 60s whose career began back in the early 70s says a lot.

@Torchsong, I'm not sure if it says something about the current state of the music industry, or just about us...

    I hope it's the former.
  • GregGreg Posts: 1,946
I will say its the current state of the music industry today, I have no problem saying that. I'm getting rather tired of having to scour the internet for good new music, because it isn't anywhere on the radio dial.

Honestly, I could answer all of these with Sigur Ros. I have been a fan since their first note and think they (and the side projects from Jonsi and others) are easily one of the greatest things in music now and for the past decade plus. So I will exclude them from my answers, but other than it being a boring list, I wouldn't.

    1) What's a song from the past year (2011-Present) that you've really enjoyed?
    Bon Iver "Perth"

    2) What band/artist have you recently "discovered" that you like?
Not super recent, but Yat-Kha. Tuvan throat singing and rock.
    Koudlam as well.

    3) What was the last CD (actual physical media) that you bought?
Ryan Hiraoka - Amazing Hawaiian Reggae singer.

    4) What was the last mp3 (or single file audio track) that you bought/downloaded?
    Bon Iver, "Bon Iver" album

    5) What are you looking forward to - music-wise - in 2012?
Sigur Ros "Valtari" - I don't care about my disclaimer, this still wins.

Aside from that in a more generic sense, I hope the trend is away from pop "personalities" and more towards talent and indie groups.

    1) What's a song from the past year (2011-Present) that you've really enjoyed?
"Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People is still pretty great... I chalk it up to the bass line and the fact that it's this bouncy, upbeat, head bobbing song about people getting shot.

    2) What band/artist have you recently "discovered" that you like?
Young Fresh Fellows. I recently found a sampler for a split CD they released a few years back with The Minus 5 in the "Free - Please Take" box in front of the campus radio station and really liked it, and only really knew them from getting namechecked in a They Might Be Giants song, so I want to find out more about them.

    3) What was the last CD (actual physical media) that you bought?
Pretty sure it was the last Juliana Hatfield album, There's Always Another Girl.

    4) What was the last mp3 (or single file audio track) that you bought/downloaded?
Either "Alone" by Heart or "I'm the Doctor in Utah" by Murray Gold and the BBC Orchestra.

    5) What are you looking forward to - music-wise - in 2012?
Nothing specific. Just finding more good music. But I wouldn't say no to another New Pornographers record, that's for sure. I don't know if one's on the horizon, but if so, it'd be appreciated.

    1) "Wash." by Bon Iver - I've been avoiding these guys because I didn't want to like a new band that everyone else was in to. However, this video changed everything (skip to 3:10 for "Wash." but the whole this is amazing):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9Tp5fl18Ho

    2) Bon Iver, but more recently than that, Of Monsters and Men

    3) Adele "21" for my wife's birthday

    4) Pre-ordered Of Mice and Men's debut "My Head is an Animal" (drops 4/3/12!)

    5) Sigur Ros "Valtari"

If you think that there's no good music being made today, you're not listening hard enough.

Totally agree on the love for Sigur Ros. "Heima" is easily the most watched/heard DVD in our home.

Lotta Sigur Ros love on here. And I will admit I loved the hell of out of "Go Do" as well as the song they used for the trailer for "Arietty" (but left out of the movie), by Jonsi. So where's a good starting point for someone totally unfamiliar with them outside of those two songs? Point me in the right direction, people! :) You might make a new fan out of me!
  • ZhurrieZhurrie Posts: 617
Ágætis byrjun (1999) without a doubt. Basically it was the first to hit the States and you should go through the discography basically in order. You will see and hear the changes and progressions as well as appreciate the later stuff more I've found. I've turned a lot of people on to them over the years and they all thanked me fro going this route.

If that doesn't interest you then maybe start there still, then jump to "( )", then to Takk, and then Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust.

Takk and Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust are a bit more easily consumed and have some catchy-ass songs aside from being brilliant. I also HIGHLY recommend you watch the official videos to as many of the songs as you can. They are moving and powerful and the video for Hoppipolla actually goes down as one of my favorite short films of all time. It is genius.

Just know that the language of most everything up to the recent stuff is not Icelandic but "Hopelandic" a made up language of sounds with no direct meanings but almost more meaningful in a way. Also, the frame of mind you are in and the surrounding matter. If you can chill out, slow down, and be able to concentrate and focus it is much better, otherwise it is easy to get distracted and have it fade into the background (not a bad thing but not a good thing when you are trying to get into it). Also, don't fight it, if something doesn't do it for you move on. I've found that I love songs I did not like initially and stuff I used to love is now secondary to other songs.

They are great people and great musicians and I really think you'll love it.
  • fredzillafredzilla Posts: 2,131
@Torchsong - ditto what @Zhurrie said. I would start with Takk. They've got some live stuff out there too.
  • TorchsongTorchsong Posts: 2,794
Really liked Heima...I like music that builds to that orchestral swell after a point and that seems to be part of what they're about (based on limited experience of course)...very nice. Will look for Takk next time I'm out.
  • ZhurrieZhurrie Posts: 617
If you dig that ebb/flow/swell kind of thing, have you ever listened to any Sound Tribe Sector 9? A different vibe from Sigur Ros but also rad and they have that build, build, build, crescendo, and then build and build even more before letting you down and it is so, so good. Live is even more amazing with them.

  • 1) "Rolling in the Deep"-Adele. (My mom has Adele's "21" album in heavy rotation on her car stereo. I'm not sure how it reflects on me that my mother's musical tastes are more contemporary than my own....)
    2) Caravan. (Thanks, Pandora!)
    3) "Octave"-The Moody Blues.
    4) I can't remember--it's been too many years since I last tried to use the iTunes Store. Now that I finally have a new iPod, perhaps I should get back in the habit.
    5) "Thick as a Brick II" by Jethro Tull!

    1) None,I haven't listened to current music in close to 10 years now.
    2) Tie between Sweet Madness and Terror Couple. Sadly both groups broke up in the late 80s
    3) Spokanarchy Soundtrack
    4) Hank III the official bootlegs 1,2,3
    5) Nothing really

Now I have never been into pop or much mainstream music. Even as a kid back in the late 70's I was listening to the Ramones,Devo, and stuff like that. But I will say for anyone into 80's punk rock get teh Spokanarchy soundtrack. It is loaded with lots of very obscure bands. Most of which never had an releases and were unknown outside teh Spokane Washington area.
  • 1) "Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson. Maybe not the best, but I have to start rocking out to it anytime I hear it, and though there are a lot of awesome albums that are new, this is the one song that sticks out.
2)Probably Marion Call. Went to the Kracklefest show at ECCC, and though it started and ended with Adam WarRock and Kirby Krackle who I love, but she was in the middle, never heard her before and I loved her performance. Amazing voice, great songs and incredible stage presence.
    3) Within the past little bit I bought Gold Parts by my friend Cristina Bautista and her band Gold Parts, and on the weekend I bought Adam WarRock's War for Infinity CD at Kracklefest.
4)Probably some of the pieces from Kelly Fenton's Bottomless Cup Jazz Orchestra's Infinite Crisis Suite.
    5) My favorite band, Starflyer 59 is soon to put out their first independent album in the beginning of next year. Also another of my favorite bands Five Iron Frenzy, is finally getting back together to record after breaking up when I was in High School. And I finally got the Wild Flag album for Christmas, and I can't wait for those ladies to do more stuff.

Buckcherry was at their best about 16-17 years ago.

Like the DD, FF and Elektra soundtracks, you might have 2-4 decent to good songs on here and the rest will be blah. Just give me an incredible musical score and not this. I will end up buying it anyways, I always do.

It shares a lot of similarities with the DD, Elektra and Punisher soundtracks, sometimes even the same artists. Could be good. Wonder if 11 is an AC/DC cover, considering that band is closely linked with Iron Man.

Joss understands that music is a character itself in the movie and I think the majority of the movie will be a score and these songs will be coming out of car radios or over the end credits. I wonder who he did get to do the score.

By the way, if you want to listen to some awesome soundtracks then find anything done by Bear McCreary. He did all the Battlestar Galactica soundtracks along with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Caprica, Eureka and a few others. His work is well worth a listen because they are interesting music and not the typical orchestral score that you would expect.
