A New Ghost Rider Series

I was looking at CBR the other day and came across an article that stunned me a little.
"All-New Ghost Rider" by Felipe Smith & Tradd Moore

They claim Marvel announced this series at NYCC, but I never saw it. Heck I made a joke about Ghost Rider being in Thinderbolts.

Now unlike the previous series by Rob Williams (which blew); I'm interested in this. The preview art seems interesting and the story concept sounds pretty strong.
They are bringing in a Ghost Rider with no John Blaze connection (similiar to vol 2s first 15 issues), and making Mr. Hyde the first villian (an early Dan Ketch villian). The new Ghost Rider is a latino kid from lower LA and he drives a flaming muscle car.

It has potential to be a pretty decent GR series

    They lost me at car

I didn't hate the last try at Ghost Rider, the first handful of issues were decent, it kind of lost it's way after that unfortunately.

I just don't know about a car. The motorcycle is almost as much of the character as the flaming skull.

I'm up for a new take on Ghost Rider. And I did enjoy, in the Aaron and Moore issues, the different Ghost Riders in various vehicles (the semi was a favorite).

And car racing has definitely been hot in pop culture the last few years (certainly more than motorcycles). Seems a smart move.

The car goes back to the Jason Aaron run. He and Way (especially Way) changed the game on GR. Way changed where the Ghost Rider power came from (it makes a lot more sense) and Aaron showed that there are always multiple Ghost Riders running around. I'm not the biggest fan of Daniel Way's run, but his last storyline was really strong.

Aaron also gave us the awesome "Bandit" Ghost Rider (he drove a flaming Black Trans Am) that introduced the car Ghost Rider.

Scoop of ice cream, scoop of dead baby. Little bit of root beer...

I've gotta move us past the Walker/dead baby.

The previous series basically ignored what happened in the Way/Aaron series. This seems like it is going to follow up on some of the ideas, and I think the art they've shown of the new GR is interesting and fits a latino kid from gang ridden lower LA

Some of these promo shots look a little more Speed Racer anime than I like but, sometimes the promo art is not representative of interior art.

The promo art is by Tradd Moore, who is also doing the interior art, and that’s his style. If you've seen either of the Luther Strode mini-series from Image, that’s Tradd too. He’s really good, especially for someone who just graduated from SCAD only a couple of years ago.

[Edit: Just looked a little closer, and the first image is someone else. But the second and third images are Tradd.]

    I just don't get it.

I have never seen the appeal of the character in any format.

Hell, I think D-Man is less ridiculous.

Of course, I don't get hair metal, either.

I think, on Cheistmas Eve, SOMEBODY is going to be visited by three Ghost Riders...

I like the look of this Ghost Rider. I think the muscle car is a nice change of pace. I honestly think I might want to check out the first issue if nothing else. Ghost Rider has always been a character I've had a remote interest in mostly for the supernatural themes but this looks pretty cool. I hope it can last.

What's Cheistmas? The Feast of St. Cheist, patron saint of testosterone poisoning?

And HGH. It is said that he once blessed the Steelers & Oakland As. He is also the Patron Saint of the 2012-2013-2014 Seatle Seahawks. Beware though he is an angry and vicious saint that has been known to rage against his followers and cause back pox.

I think it is the patron saint of posting on a smartphone while chasing after a toddler!
  • Tradd Moore is awesome and I'm glad he's got mainstream work. That said... A car based superhero comic? I am limited in my imagination because I can't see a take that will work. Unless its a demonic Wacky Races. Then I'm on board.

Otherwise... I have questions about the practicality of a car based hero.

    1. Being in the car cuts him off from the outside world. Does he stick his head out the window to shout at villians? Honk menacingly?

    2. Leaving the car to confront bad guys defeats the purpose of his car all together, then it's just a cool ride for a guy who's stuck on foot a whole lot. But what does he do when a guy goes down a narrow alley, or the the 5th floor of a building? Or on a boat.

    3. Where does he park? Does he have to worry about tickets? What happens if he locks his keys in his car?

A motorcycle just felt more plausible when it came to including it in unlikely places, and it allowed GR to interact with the world around him.

The intake on the skull is pretty badass though.

I've read far too much GR than anyone should from 1990 to present(80% at a rough estimate, I've got about 20% of my GR collection to read). I've read about 50% of the first volume through esstentials.

As long as how he gets there and looks rad in doing so the story should be awesome. I can't imagine riding riding a flaming car that can do hellfire things a problem. The Ghost Rider kicks tail off his bike or car. His flaming skull on a bike just looks way cooler than Cap waiting on the Quinn Jet to land.

That someone else being the writer of the comic Felipe Smith, who is an accomplished artist himself (PEEPO CHOO, character design on the new TMNT show).

Maybe it is the New Yorker in me, but I would read the shit out of that.
