I could say something cliche & corny, but then I feel more awkward then if I inserted a witty comment.
I could reference a biblical verse, but it's not in my nature...and I don't know any.
Instead, let me say this; fight to the end. Go down swinging. Never stop fighting & never surrender.

John, thank you for spending time with us, and being one of the most active members of the community, especially in these past months when I can only imagine what time has meant. Thanks for the laughs, the occasional non sequiturs and things that you translated across cultural lines. And thanks for your honesty and bravery in talking about what it is you have been facing, and for saying goodbye.
All comfort and grace to you and your family during the time and travels ahead. We'll miss you.
The fact that you came here to give us a heartfelt goodbye speaks volumes to how important this community truly is. And the fact that so many of us show up on a thread just to get our own personal goodbyes in...speaks even MORESO to the man YOU are. And regardless of how well I know you or not, losing someone like you is never easy. With that said, I leave you with a poem from my favorite poet Robert Frost. It may be the easiest of his (and most famous) to reach for, but that doesn't make it unfitting for this.
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
