    1) What's a song from the past year (2011-Present) that you've really enjoyed?
I guess I have to join the ranks of those who have no idea what was released in the last decade or so. I did a quick search for "best songs of 2011" and practically didn't recognize a single artist. I'm officially irrelevant. I do like what little I know of Adele, although I couldn't really tell you the name of any of her songs.
And I do have to agree with Modern Lover that Kelly Clarkson's 'Stronger' is an amazing performance. That girl has incredible pipes. But it's unlikely I'd ever buy one of her records.

    2) What band/artist have you recently "discovered" that you like?
I really like 'Joy Kills Sorrow', also Vince Bell is really interesting. I heard a song on the radio by a band named 'The Script' that I'll have to look into.
We went to the Bahamas a few weeks ago, while we were there I stumbled across a guy named Joseph Spence. He's like the folk equivalent of Mr. Bungle. I freaking love him.

    3) What was the last CD (actual physical media) that you bought?
Miles Davis Quintet 'Live in Europe 1967'

    4) What was the last mp3 (or single file audio track) that you bought/downloaded?
    Gold Panda - 'You'

    5) What are you looking forward to - music-wise - in 2012?
Lyle Lovett's 'Release Me' came out in February.
Branford Marsalis new album '4 MFs Playing Tunes' comes out in August.
Tenacious D also are apparently due to release their 3rd record in May!! (Looking forward to that for sure!).
Another Rush album in May as well? I'm ambivalent.
New Soundgarden album? I'd be more excited if Chris Cornell hadn't lost his voice in the late 90's.

I agree with the Adele love. If I didn't pick what I did, I would probably have picked one of her songs. Or one of the songs off the Wild Flag album because it is really awesome. Oh my God it is so awesome. And the new Kate Bush album, despite her hardly singing on it, is amazing. And the new Blue Scholars, and that's just off the top of my head. Good year, I thought.

'The Touch' is what it is all about. That whole album is awesome and that movie still beats the new ones.

Yeah Joey is dead. This album is made up of demos and some songs he recorded before his death that never got released. Joey is still my favorite rock singer and he is the reason I ,in high school, started my own band. We played 2 gigs. One was at the high school talent show and 1 minute into our first song the principal pulled the plug on us. We were doing a cover of the Dead kennedy's song "Holidays in Cambodia". And I was smart and changed the n-word to brothers so to not cause any trouble. The second gig was in this huge field that was right next to a buddies home. About 20 people showed up and we did the 10 songs we knew, plus 2 original songs. We were never a good band but it was fun.

I haven't played any music ever. In the band I was the singer. The band name was Regex. And we mainly did covers of 70's thru early 80s punk rock songs. Mostly stuff from the Ramones,Dead Kennedys,Black Flag and The Clash. Our two original songs were "F them before they F U!" and "I wanna be ugly". about 5 years ago at a good friends birthday party he had a band made up of some friends of ours playing in his backyard. Well everyone kept wanting me to go up and sing. I did,but it turns out that cause at the time I was smoking 2 packs a day of Camel Non filters my voice couldn't hold up that well. But I did manage to do 3 songs before I had to quit. Ended up doing "The Ramones-Love Kills" "Black Flag-No Values" and "The Misfits-Skulls". I know someone there was video recording it. If I can get them to send me a copy I will have to upload it to Youtube. I just hope yall don't have a problem understanding me. Mainly cause I have a super thick southern accent.

At one time I had a cassette of Regex playing some songs. But I lost that tape years ago,and no one seems to still have a copy.

    1) What's a song from the past year (2011-Present) that you've really enjoyed?
God Gave Me You by Blake Shelton - This was a hard one, but it just beats out some of Toby Keith's, Luke Bryan's, Keith Urban, and other Blake stuff. This was really hard.

    2) What band/artist have you recently "discovered" that you like?
Gene McDaniels - I know he was actually big 50 years ago, but I just heard his music recently and he has music that is actual music.

    3) What was the last CD (actual physical media) that you bought?
Vineyard Music - The CD of Worship music my Church gives out.

    4) What was the last mp3 (or single file audio track) that you bought/downloaded?
Jacob Loves You by The Others - Yes, they are indeed a LOST tribute band. I also do know I have an unhealthy obsession with LOST.

    5) What are you looking forward to - music-wise - in 2012?
Philly's local Country station 92.5 has its 28th Anniversary Show in June. I can't wait. I don't drink, but it is fascinating watching these people tailgate all day and go wild at night. And the music is cool too.
  • 1) What's a song from the past year (2011-Present) that you've really enjoyed?
    Leslie Baker David's "2 B Simple." It's like weaponized pop music. :)

    2) What band/artist have you recently "discovered" that you like?
Duran Duran. Upon closer inspection of their album, Rio, I began to really enjoy their music.

    3) What was the last CD (actual physical media) that you bought?
G.E. Smith And The Saturday Night Live Band's Get A Little. Good stuff.

    4) What was the last mp3 (or single file audio track) that you bought/downloaded?
"Short Change Hero" by The Heavy.

    5) What are you looking forward to - music-wise - in 2012?
Putting out some of my own music after being out of the music game for almost a decade.

Here's a promo I put together that shows where I had left off:

    http://youtu.be/Txen5mVv6sw

As far as everyone else, I tend to gravitate towards classic re-releases of music.

Okay, it's a slow day so let's move on and add 5 more questions:

    6) What's the best live show you've ever been to? Not necessarily in terms of your favorite band (unless it is) but who or what gave you the absolute best live experience (and venue may play a role as well).

    7) What's the best cover song you've ever heard?

    8) What artist or band are you willing to admit you like, though it may lessen your standing as a music-lover among the relative group of strangers who come to these forums :) ?

    9) Sometimes movies based around a band's music can be awesome, like the Beatles with "Across the Universe". Sometimes they can be horrible, like the Beatles with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". What's your favorite/least favorite movie based around a band's music?

    10) For one night, you can bring someone back from the dead/reunite one band for a one-shot gig, or reform a band at the peak of their talent. Who is it? Difficulty factor: No Zeppelin (Bonham).
  • TorchsongTorchsong Posts: 2,794
    6) R.E.M. on the Green Tour. They'd just made the leap from alternative darlings to major rock-band status, and the growing pains and rawness came across onstage. They were at war with trying to keep the newer fans there to hear "Stand" around long enough to realize how awesome a song "Perfect Circle" is.

    7) Dwight Yoakum absolutely nails Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds".

    8) There are many, but I've been taken to task on this forum and others for liking Journey. This was before Glee came along and made them popular again.

    9) Best: Brave, by Marillion. Basically their concept album about a woman's suicide put to film. Worst: Toss up between Xanadu (both ELO and The Tubes contributed to it), and KISS Meets the Phantom (which isn't really fair as the songs are played in a concert setting)

    10) Speaking of the Who, I'd totally bring Entwhistle and Moon back, just to hear Boris the Spider one more time... :)

@Torchsong, that "Across the Universe" stuck around in my head for days, and I wasn't the only one to feel that way. I never buy soundtracks, yet this one was boughtn that wknd I saw it. Reaffrimed my love for the Beatles, even though it was my father who saw them @ Shea Stadium and I wasn't even a twinkle in his eye.

Ever see this opening from the Rock Band's tribute to the Fab Four:

Miles Davis at the Kongresshaus Zurich (sometime in 1990/91 - sadly his last visit to Switzerland). It was just awesome. The venue was quite small. We sat in the front row. The stage less than 10m away. The concert started around 3-4 hours(!) late because the band, with equipment, was held up at the border. But everybody stayed. Miles was in unusual good mood that night. Usually Miles played while turning his back to the audience. Not this time. Near the end he even took off his sunglasses and smiled at the crowd. Unforgettable.

    7) What's the best cover song you've ever heard?

Rufus Wainwraight's version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

    8) What artist or band are you willing to admit you like, though it may lessen your standing as a music-lover among the relative group of strangers who come to these forums ?

    A-ha

    6) This is really hard to answer since I have been to so many concerts. I guess I would have to say the very first Lollapalooza. Jane's addiction and Body Count on the same show.

    7) Hmm tie between this grear Death metal cover of "Hit me baby one more time" by some death metal band or "Somebody to love" by The Ramones and Traci Lords.

    8) This is easy ,even among my friends they still rag me about this. But I love the Spice Girls. If they ever do a reunion tour I would go.

    9) Can't answer this cause all the movies I have seen based around an band's music I have hated. Even as a huge Spice Girls fan I didn't like Spice World.

    10) Easy I would love for this lineup of The Ramones to do one last show. Joey on vocals,Dee Dee on bass,Johnny on lead guitar, and Richie on drums.

#6 - Ozzy Osbourne. The man puts on one hell of show. My dad took me to see him at Alpine Valley in '92 as part of my graduation gift. Ugly Kid Joe opened and they were great. Slaughter came on next and stunk the place up. I remember vividly the look on Mark Slaughter's face when he got beamed in the side of the head with a chunk of sod. Ozzy, though, that show is what I compare all others too.

#7 - I may lose points for this, but I really like covers songs done in bluegrass; The Grassmasters, Hayseed Dixie amongst others.

#8 - Since Al said Journey...does Foreigner come close to that?

#9 - I don't have a favorite and my least favorite would be Pink Floyd's The Wall.

    #10 - Stevie Ray Vaughn

    6. Nine Inch Nails in 1994. This was back when Trent Reznor was crazy and you were safer in the mosh pit than you were on stage. Absolutely crazy. Another honorable mention would be when I saw Zwan. The show itself was good, but nothing particularly memorable. What was cool about it was the fact that it was actually the first Zwan show in a small club and the fact that this was Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain's new band was only rumor and nobody really knew for sure so there was this bit of tension in the air since nobody really knew what was coming. At one point a security guard walked on stage for a bit and when he was first walking out from backstage, all you could see over the partition was the top of a tall person's bald head so everybody started cheering thinking the show was starting and it really was who they thought it was, but it all quickly died down when they saw who it was. Pigface was also a ton of fun.

    7. On the same note as the last one, Nine Inch Nail's cover of "Get Down Make Love."

    8. There would be a few I could put here. I'll admit to liking Madonna's music (not her though). I own a Kanye West CD that I love even though he's a complete douchebag (I'm thinking some of this is becoming music I like by people I don't). I know most people think of The Bloodhound Gang as a one-note joke band, but Hooray for Boobies is a really fun album. Going back to the first question again, the opening act for that show was Marilyn Manson and I really like a lot of his/their music up until he started singing about his love life and became the Hot Topic poster boy (he made much better music back when he was pissed off at the world instead of pissed off at his exes). I like Axl Rose's new band that he's calling Guns N Roses, but it really isn't Guns N Roses. I'll leave the answer to this question up to the forum to decide which one I should be the most embarrassed about.

    9. I haven't really seen a lot of music-based movies, and when I do, it's because I know going into it that it's considered good, so I can't really say much for least. For favorite, it would be "The Wall" with "The Song Remains the Same" as a close second.

    10. If you're going to increase the difficulty factor, you have to also say "No Beatles." That one's a no-brainer, possibly even more than Zeppelin. If we're going to eliminate both the Beatles and Zeppelin.... Nirvana. With a very, very close second to either the Doors or Pink Floyd (depending on my mood, I might go with one of them over Nirvana - but all three of which are shows I would immediately go see if I had a time machine) I was never a massive Hendrix fan, but if I came across a time machine, I would still use it to go to one of his concerts. If we're going with band that are still alive and together but not exactly at "the peak of their talent" I'd go with the Rolling Stones. One of my favorite bands that doesn't exist anymore, although still alive, would be Sister Machine Gun, but I actually saw them live once, so I can't include them. Another one of my favorite bands that doesn't exist anymore, but everyone involved is still alive, that I never saw live would be Mr Bungle. And of course, there's Mozart.

  • @ John_Steed thanks. :)

    6) What's the best live show you've ever been to? Not necessarily in terms of your favorite band (unless it is) but who or what gave you the absolute best live experience (and venue may play a role as well)?

B.B. King. If I may stretch this to include a concert-based DVD, I would say it's a draw between Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood and the Cream reunion.

    7) What's the best cover song you've ever heard?

You mean excluding my own covers? :) I can't narrow that down at all. Too many great versions of songs I like. Sorry. :(

    8) What artist or band are you willing to admit you like, though it may lessen your standing as a music-lover among the relative group of strangers who come to these forums ?

I have been pretty open about who I like and dislike musically. It just depends, I suppose. For purposes of giving an answer, I'll go with Nickelback. Always a cringe-inducing answer. :)

Least - Rock And Roll High School.

Too many that I like to pick a favorite.

Thanks for mentioning "Rock n Roll High School". Not sure why I didn't think of it earlier. But is my favorite film based around a band. But really if you aren't a fan of the Ramones I can see why someone wouldn't like it.
  • @ dubbat138

You're welcome. However, there is a slight misunderstanding. I do, in fact, really enjoy The Ramones. I also have a great love for the Roger Corman/New World Pictures films. It's just one of those odd instances where two things enjoyed are combined into a single thing that isn't entertaining.

To me, it's a combination of a Ramones showcase that keeps getting interrupted by a silly film and a "rock 'n' roller" that has fallen into a very insistent puddle of punk music that it doesn't quite know how to frame.

I don't like the film because it's (again, my opinion) too unwieldy and imbalanced.

I have found amoung my friends that aren't into punk music, that they still enjoy The Ramones. I love the film and have owned it on 3 formats now. VHS,Laserdisc and DVD. Plus have seen it 3 times in a theater. One week after showing Rocky Horror the local indy theater showed it.The crowd loved it .

looking forward to: anything by Nana Grizol (CHECK EM OUT!) & Tycho (if you're into ambient dance tunes).
  • Late to the party.

    1. For me it's a toss up between Holocene or Towers, both by Bon Iver. Kind of ridiculous that they won the Grammy for Best New Artist, considering that this was their 2nd album. A lot of folks have been on board for several years now.
    2. She and Him. Very retro.
