bleeding cool has two versions of the new teaser trailer.
the second one has something extra in it that i was thinking about while watching the first. it's funny how history (alternate) has a way of repeating itself. or rather, some things are meant to happen. of course the ultimate twist would be to have the two reverse roles.
There's still some debate as to which villain Cumberbach will be portraying. Some say Khan, others say Gary Mitchell. I'm siding with the people who say Gary Mitchell. Alice Eve, the blonde haired woman in the new trailer (left), bears an uncanny resemblance to Mitchell's love interest, Dr. Elizabeth Dehner (originally portrayed by Sally Kellerman).
When I say "some things are meant to happen", I'm not saying the whole plot will be repeated. Maybe, hopefully, hardly any of it. But rather, someone is meant to die... and come back.
It looks terrible. Just awful. War, tons of violence... Not what i think of star trek. I wonder how many lens flares there will be. Sigh.
You just want to see Kirk with his shirt off making out with tons of alien hotties while helping Spock with the Pon far or are you just being silly?
Actually, he's got a point. Trek used to make a deal about making peace through diplomacy and addressing current issues through analogy and metaphor. Now it's about clashes and blowing stuff up. While the latter is visually cool, it kinda gets away from the heart of the original series and is trending towards being just another Buck Rogers type space opera, eschewing any genuine drama.
Trailers tend to focus only on the big visuals, so who knows. Hopefully, there will be strong character moments, and somehow the threat will connect in a more meaningful way than just blowing stuff up.
part of the ST bible was the mandate that humanity (and or the federation) had evolved beyond interpersonal conflict. this is a nice concept in the 60's when you see a multinational crew in the middle of the cold war but as the different iterations of the series progressed it became problematic because you could rarely have any drama between the crew. conflict is the heart of drama and without it keeping a series fresh is challenging. all this of course if just a way for me to say...i'm cool with blowing stuff up.

It also wasn't necessarily something that held true among the episodes themselves. I can't recall too many episodes where, while that ideal was being upheld, that they managed to not fire any phasers (hand or ship-mounted) or launch a single photon torpedo. Sure, they were often set to stun, but there was still plenty of instances where force is applied to accomplish the goals at hand.
They may have tried to respond peacefully first, but Kirk was always prepared to take the velvet glove off of the iron fist.

I'm someone who didn't care for (and didn't know much beyond the basics of) Star Trek before the last movie, and ended up loving it.
I felt like my basic knowledge was rewarded, and yet it still felt like I didn't have to know anything about the other continuity/continuities.
Loved the first - can't wait for the next.
Wasn't this the first story arc in the new Star Trek comic from IDW? So much for that being in continuity.
Because if there's one thing J.J. Abrams is known for, it's being direct, obvious, and generous with potentially spoiler-filled information. :))

Obviously you may want to take this with a grain of salt.
