I thought I was the only one crazy enough to ever think of this very question lol. Assuming theyre both in their prime, I say Riggs wins even if only barely. Although I prefer McClane, I think from what we know about the characters Riggs has more actual skill while McClane has more will.
Given the choices; McClaine. His deeds, while over the top, always seemed possible, at least the first three Die Hards. Riggs never came as off as believable to me, whether that is a function of the character and/or acting by Gibson. I have no fondness for the Lethal Weapon series and considering my action film tastes, it never took with me. The bond between them always seemed forced and the antics just were too much. If Joe Pesci was annoying enough they trumped him with Chris Rock. McClaine all the way.
Love the fact that you guys are arguing about this. My brother and I do one of these every week on our podcast. Thanks for the votes and the comments so far. I will post another each week if you guys interested. It will vary when it comes to topic.

MWHITT80: God how did you guys make 25 posts on how blue the sky is. Just visit CGS Outdoors, then talk about the NFL (because I can't drum up enough interest in an NBA thread). Ghost Rider!

TONEBONE: Cornflower!
MATT: Come on, it's clearly a bright shade of gray!
DAVID_D: It all depends on where you're standing, I should think...
NWEATHINGTON: Interestingly enough, it was Schlomo Lowenstein who really revolutionized the use of blue in the 1940s.
WETRATS: Pure Comic-y Blueness.
