With Parks and Rec ending tonight what does NBC have for comedies?
Undatable is coming back soon, but everything they started in the fall flopped big time. I wonder if they will be able to build a comedy schedule ever again, seeing as show CBS has the broad, "joke factory" comedies, and ABC is where people go if they have a more thoughtful style...successful producers tend to pitch to successful networks.
NBC was able to build the "Must see TV" formula because they had Cheers, and did such a good job working with it that producers felt NBC was the place to do high quality work. Now...
I'm with Bill Simmons on NBC making a new Cheers show. Set it in Chicago with Vince Vaughn as the bar owner. He could be a former baseball or hockey player. It's a pipedream though bc the internet/24-7 News would get all high and mighty over the new version of Norm and Carlla.
It's all cyclical. NBC goes through spells of being drama-heavy, then goes back to being comedy-heavy. I imagine that cycle will continue, and four or five years from now they'll be back to a more comedy-heavy schedule.
I find it hard to watch any of the sitcoms on TV right now -- they're all unwatchable to me in one way or another. The only one I truly enjoy is Big Bang Theory. I tried to watch the new Odd Couple last week, but it felt off and like it was trying too hard. Maybe its just pilot roughness, and I need to see a couple of more episodes to see if it settles into something more watchable... but I dunno...

I read Warren Littlefield's book where he explained in detail how NBC build the comedy roster, and he said the big thing was once they showed they would put on a quality show and give it time to grow, producers would knock on their door with their better product. Now, NBC doesn't have anything to show that they do that.
Add to that that changes in how people watch TV, I don't know they will have the ability to draw producers. Tina Fey's new show got stolen by Netflix, FXX is actively looking to build it's roster... It's a different world.
I find it odd that I watch so few sitcoms. I think I only have Brooklyn Nine Nine, Maron, and Garfunkle and Oates on my DVR, and do Archer, Simpsons and Family Guy count? There's a REAL lack of funny on TV now.
I would be just fine if I never had to listen to another laugh track.
Th great thing about the sitcoms I like? No laugh track. The MASH DVDs come with the option to watch without it and it makes the show twice as good. Maybe after the Chuck Lorre empire collapses, they'll all be gone.
THE WORST are when a show has been on a few years, and the audience applauds when one of the regulars comes on screen. That made Happy Days unwatchable for me.

On a brighter note. I just discovered that I have Retro TV. I discovered this while channel surfing and being stunned by the beautiful Mary Tamm in Stones of Blood.

I still think ABC has a strong set of comedies Wednesday night, the Middle , Goldbergs, Modern Family, Blackish. And Fresh off the Boat has been very strong out of the gate

I look at the NBC schedule and Parks & Rec was the only comedy on the schedule this week. So now they have nothing.
NBC has basically got out of the comedy business this year. They cancelled almost everything, they sold a completed season of a new show to Netflix and haven't scheduled anything or really announced in development for next season. And it's about time. While I liked a few of their sitcoms it's been toxic for their schedule.
Turner Classic Movies is showing the entire LOTR trilogy
Yep...yesterday was supposed to be my last day at my full time job (layoffs....) and I had planned to watch the whole thing on TCM High Def. It was like they KNEW I wouldn't have to work the next day.

Then, they asked me to stay another week.
Bastards.
Congratulations.

Not really. Still outsourced. But, I kept my part-time job, and they are supplying me with a LOT of extra hours while I find something new.

And the fact they brought Rob Lowe back for it was *LITERALLY* the greatest moment in the history of America.
@TheOriginalGMan !! That was LITERALLY the best post ever!
He owns up to writing a weak script, when so many other filmmakers would blame anything and everything else.
