Didn't people see RDJ as being past his prime before Iron Man? I'm not saying Depp would be great for the part (I think Hugh Laurie is the best one listed here...though Walton Goggins needs to be doing more work!), but I hesitate to say any actor is really past his/her prime until I see it.
Side note: Depp was the wrong choice for Tonto, also.

I didn't see RDJ as being past his prime Pre-Iron Man. Actually I felt he hadn't lived up to his potential at that point. But maybe that's just me.
And I don't think anyone is saying Depp is past his prime per se, just that he has become somewhat one-dimensional when it comes to his blockbuster film roles. I think he can still put in a great performance when he finds a role interesting enough. But over the past several years, he has seemingly taken a lot of roles simply for the money, and it’s shown in his performances, where he just puts on a broad affectation and lets that carry him through.
No problem with this at all. Not thrilled. Not disappointed. Not all that interested or concerned either. Could maybe do better but could certainly do much worse.
Ten years ago, I might have thought this was a good idea.
Now, I think it would be a waste of money.
Depp has gotten to the point where directors can't rein in his freakishness.
I think the look is there and he could play the character well but I'll share @WetRats' concern. I know this has been said before but Johnny Depp plays Johnny Depp now.
Doc Strange needs someone who is poised and wise, after the initial fall from grace and arrogance.

Uh. How the heck do I post a photo on this thread now?
Disney does love them some Depp though. You make 5 billion dollars for a company and they'll put you on as many posters as possible.

Yeah, that's right. I went there!
But he's never read a comic book
Apparently you guys pegged this one.

I don't think that this wouldn't be a bad choice for Doc Strange
Sure, and bring Christina Hendricks in as Clea. Yes, she does have the power to make men pitch tents.
Thank you
