I don't think I'm the target demographic for this one...
I recall the theme song more then anything else. The woman (girl at the time) who sang the songs still looks hot...she's got big Angelina Jolie-type lips, too.
Is it weird just last night I was looking at Jem shirts as a gift for my younger sister?!
Does this look as bas as the Josie and the Pussycats movie? I know nothing about Jem other than it was a thing that was truly Outrageous.
Yeah, it's basically the same plot as the Josie & the Pussycats movie....except Josie was making fun of these kinds of stories. This on the other hand is played seriously.
Also, I think Josie & the Pussycats is a vastly underrated film.
Was the original Jem actually good enough to be outraged about this?
Not a sarcastic question--if it weren't for the truly obnoxious jingle, I'd not even remember the existence of the show/toy.
To answer WetRats' question, I sent my intrepid reporter (Me) to ask my wife, a longtime Jem fan who grew up watching the cartoon, knows all the characters, and (still) has a number of the dolls in her collection.
Your take, Michele?
"Lame! (They're) just using the names! (It's) not really Jem. No Holograms, no Synergy, no earrings!!"

And apparently no Misfits, either.
'Twould seem there is a fair amount of passion amongst a certain contingent.
I thought it was just another shoddy show created to flog shoddy toys.
Of course, I thought the same was true of GI Joe, Transformers, TMNT, etc. ... why should "girls' toys" be any less passionately remembered?
Well, by 80s standards even an obvious toy-shill show could still be fun and worth tuning in. Don't get my wife started on Masters of the Universe aka He-Man. :)
And I'm guessing Jem was pretty beloved by some people or there wouldn't be a fanbase to pander to (or in this case capitalize on the brand name).

Let's see if this actually comes to anything. A social media cattle-call is... daunting.
