Space Ghost died today—RIP Gary Owens (1934-2015)

I met Gary Owens several years ago in San Diego. Mark Evanier was walking the floor with him and brought him by the TwoMorrows booth. I got to talk with him for a good 15 minutes—well, I said a few words, and then Gary told several funny stories about his days in radio. He was such an unassuming guy that he gave me his business card as he was leaving. It was pretty awesome. One of those rare times when your heroes live up to expectations and then some.

Evanier talked about him on his page for this, and related stories that made him sound like a great guy, very professional and very outgoing. He made a lot of people happy, and that's something to be proud of.

A little known fact was that Owens himself was a pretty talented cartoonist in his own right. Animator Mike Kazaleh posted online a self-caricature cartoon that Owens did for him as a repayment for Mike giving him the first page of a Ren & Stimpy comic he did back in the 90's, which depicted Powder Toast Man, a character Owens voiced for the show. Mike also stressed that Owens was one of the few people in Hollywood who really was as nice in person as his on-air persona suggested.

A little piece of my childhood passes with him. When I was little little I would fold loose leaf into bracelets, draw buttons on them, tape them around my wrist and run around the house as Space Ghost.
