One I loved but have yet to see mentioned here is #44, What If Captain America Were Not Revived Until Today? Awkward title, but great story (and another Sienkiewicz cover... not his most eye-catching, but my first exposure to his work).
Basically, Namor zigs instead of zags and never comes across Cap frozen in the ice. A few years later, when Nixon goes to China, someone disgusted with state of the nation frees 50s Cap & Bucky from their suspended animation, and their particular brand of violent jingoism is embraced by 70s Cap villainous mainstays like the Committee to Regain America's Principles (CRAP), the Secret Empire, William Taurey, and the like. America becomes a fascist state, most of the super heroes are driven into obscurity, "retirement", or underground as revolutionaries.
And despite all that... the ending isn't entirely a bummer, because as the title promises, the real Cap does indeed return, and oh is he unhappy. :D
This was the first issue of What If...I ever bought. I'm not sure where I got it but I loved the Cap vs Cap fight. This was my introduction to retcons and multiple Caps.
I've been grabbing the occasional copy of What If...? just to read, and unlike volume 1 of this series, volume 2 issues can usually be picked up for a buck or less at most comic shops. However, I've discovered that from the volume 2 series, issue #49 "What if the Silver Surfer Possessed the Infinity Gauntlet?" is very hard to find for less than $10 or $15 bucks at comics shops, if at all. A quick search for it on eBay has it regularly selling for between $25 and $80...!?!
Does anyone have any insight as to why this particular issue is in such demand? It appears to be the most highly valued issue from the entire second volume of that series. I'm bewildered.
FUN FACT: It was one of the first Marvel works (if not first comics works PERIOD) of Ron Marz! (We interviewed him recently on my podcast and I had to ask him about it while he was on since it's one of my favorite What If...? stories.)

Cool! I will check out the LanternCast tonight :)
I think the speculation/price jump is probably just direcly related to the Marvel movies / Thanos connection. Don't recall there being any other What If...?'s related to Thanos / Infinity Gauntlet.

Amazing! I don't think I have ever seen either of those! The Impossible Man one looks fun!

I've never seen either of those! And in fact, neither of them are pulling that same kind of price tag... The mystery deepens...
And I'll actually put the last issue of What if? on there as well, as I would put money on it inspiring the team of "Next Avengers" that got an animated movie and has appeared in both Bendis and Hickman's Avengers' run.
Oh, and almost forgot one of the weirder ones that still sticks with me:

Heck, the entire Infinity Gauntlet series can be picked up for $50

My first answer was this but I realised it wasn't a "What If" issue...
So... Quesada plagiarized?!?
One more comment about this issue. Unlike most What If...? stories, this one has a happy ending for a change. Very refreshing.
