So the gauntlet fits the right hand okay? Has there ever been a story about the possible existence of a gauntlet that fits the left hand? And the gems that might go on that left-handed gauntlet?

If I recall correctly, it's just the gems. It was Thanos who gathered them & mounted them onto a gauntlet. It could've just as easily been on a hat, crown, belt, purse...I mean satchel. He just must be right-handed.
I could be wrong about that, but that's the impression I've been under since the mini-series.
The Infinity Purse...man, that would've been a whole different book...
I'm now imagining Thanos' grandmother (who just so happens to look like him if he were wearing a grey wig and dress) beating Silver Surfer over the head with her Infinity Purse because he and the rest of his Cosmic friends accidentally broke her window while playing baseball. Thank you, @Torchsong .
Now, I wonder if I could get Perez to draw that at a con...
I could see Fred Hembeck having drawn a story like that back in Marvel Age!
But to get back to actually answering the question, @Matt was right. Thanos gathered up the six gems and just placed them on his glove. There was no such thing as an "Infinity Gauntlet" before then.

In the movies, the gauntlet is in Asgard. Does this mean all the gems have been previously gathered and seperated or is a special gauntlet needed to wield them? (I'd make them a part of my being)
With the power of the collected gems, one could make the gauntlet either lefty or righty.

The gauntlet goes on the left hand.
This whole thread's invalid now! :D
Are YOU going to tell Cap he's jammed it onto the wrong hand? ;)
To be fair, selfies *might* be more of a Marvel thing. You could argue that Peter Parker invented them, as that was how he made his living for awhile. ;)
Yup, I always understood it to be that it doesn't matter how the gems are arranged. Warlock wore his soul gem on his forehead. If that works then the assembled gems shouldn't care it they're on a certain article of clothing..let alone a right or left handed gauntlet.

(Behind the ammo dump)
