Trek has enjoyed a long fandom in the comics as well as on television, and this a pretty significant event for most of us who grew up with the series, so I'm putting it on the main page as well.
It's a sad, sad day, but also a day to be thankful and maybe settle down with a little classic Trek to remember just how cool it was that he brought Roddenberry's character to such amazing life that it pretty much became THE first thing you think of when you think of Star Trek.
RIP. Mr. Nimoy. I'll be watching your work for the rest of my life, I am sure.

If you just think back on what he did with a character that could have been a one-note, dull exposition machine his talent was amazing. He became a touchpoint for mixed race people, people who felt like they didn't belong and nerds of all stripe.
And, he was excellent in his other roles, like on Mission Impossible, Fringe, etc...
I'm glad he knew how much he was admired and adored.
My wife and I are in the midst of Star Trek season 2 on Netflix. Hearing he went into the hospital recently, I saw it as a bad sign. He will be missed. Let's remember, while most known for Star Trek, he was involved with other projects. One of my favorite:
I, unfortunately, kinda saw this coming when he was admitted recently with "severe chest pain". Nonethaless it was a surprise to see in my news feed THIS soon after.
I don't know much of Nimoys work from Star Trek to be honest. Sure, I've seen the one off episode while channel surfing every now and again. And I saw the new movies. Primarily I guess I'll remember him as a geek icon that was Spock. But my PERSONAL exposure to his acting brilliance will probably be his role as William Bell in 'FRINGE', a TV series I adore enough to own every season on blu-ray.
His appearance on that show was amazing. Dignified. Theatrical. And his ability to play a calm and seemingly rational villain, a mad misguided genius...it was truly creepy at times.
I always enjoyed him watching him in non-Spock roles, much more than Shatner's post Star Trek life. I'd be hesitant to say he had much range as an actor but he found his niche and did it well. It's great to hear in the wake of his death how great a person he was, standing his ground to make sure Takei, Koeing, and Nichols got hired for TAS and other facts that have been mentioned. He starred in a Bangles video just to add to his cred for me and that last tweet is a fantastic farewell. I get that they are just actors playing roles to us but sometimes it hits deeper, feels worse when they go. I watch that Khan death scene every time it's on because it's so well done and I thank him for playing an icon and living like one too.
I've been watching the 90s Outer Limits and just so happened to watch a Nimoy episode on the day of his passing. Reminded me what a special TV actor he was.
MeTV posted an "In Memory Of" shot last night (like Antenna did for Gary Owens last week) during their Sci-Fi Saturday shows and announced that they will be running a marathon of non-Trek shows in which Nimoy appeared. I don't remember when, though. They also changed the scheduled episode of Star Trek and aired Amok Time instead.

Nimoy also appeared in an episode of the original Outer Limits back in the 60's -- the Adam Link "I, Robot" episode. Which I also saw very recently.
Mr. Nimoy's performance as Spock showed a range that I don't often see in other performers. Some of my favorite episodes of TOS are episodes in which he mind melds with another being.
The complexity of playing a character who is already involved in his own inner struggle of maintaining control over his emotions is impressive enough. It's already as if he's playing two separate characters who inhabit the same body.
To then add a third layer to that performance by now taking on the emotions and personality traits of the character he's mind melding with while still playing "in character" as Spock goes beyond impressive and made Nimoy a genius.
As far as non-Trek performances of his, Baffled! still holds a special place in my heart. It's...interesting to say the least. The VHS is hard to find but for those who haven't seen it and wish to do so, it is on YouTube.
His cameo on Muppets Tonight was also amusing, although it's better if you can watch it in context to the episode of Pigs In Space preceding it.
