The 2016 Reading Thread - April

The Better Late Than Never Edition

The "rules" are simple: Keep a post/log of everything you read and list it on here. At the end of each month pick a "winner" (ie. the book you enjoyed the most for that month) and post it in the next month's thread. Refer to the 2015 or 2014 versions creeping around here for a solid example. I tend to focus on trades, but if you want to log your single issues, go for it. Don't start a new post each time you want to add something - simply edit your existing post. I tend to bold the issues/books that really stood out each month.

New This Year: Just to mix things up...the list seems to focus on quantity, so let's add quality into the mix. If you read a book that really knocked your socks off - put a sentence or two out from it that clues the rest of us in that this might be a book worth checking out. You don't have to do it for every book, and it's probably a good idea just to keep it to a sentence or two, but I think this'll add some fun to it and maybe generate a discussion or three.

March Winner: Multiversity: Collected HC (DC)

    April Books:

Justice League: The Darkseid War Part 1 (DC)
Batman: Superheavy (DC) - God help me I actually like Jim Gordon as Batman.
    Princess Jellyfish Vol. 1 (Kodansha)
Nichijou: My Ordinary Life Vol. 1 (Vertical) - A spiritual successor to Azumanga Daioh, with enough weirdness to make it its own beast.
Justice League 3001 Vol. 1 (DC)
Nisekoi Vol. 14 (Viz) - Gets props for a hilarious Tsukumi storyline at the end. Every time I think about dropping this marathon of a series, something makes me laugh and I put it right back on the order form.

    Dorohedoro Vol. 18 (Viz)
My Love Story Vol. 8 (Viz)
    DC's Bombshells Vol. 1 (DC)

April I'll Ronpa the Hell out of @Torchsong Edition

Finally I've read some books. Now let's talk comics.

Appleseed Book 1: The Promethean Challenge (digital)- I've never read or seen anything Appleseed, but comixology had a sale. I can't say I loved the book, and it was difficult to follow. The art was nice though, so I'll give book 2 a try.

Johnny Boo: Best Little Ghost in the World vol 1 (digital)- I'm all in on Johnny Boo, and more importantly James Kochalka's kids books. He might write the most fun kids comics in the world.

    Black Panther #1 (digital)
    Powerman & Ironfist #2 (digital)

Bob's Burgers #1-5 - I was excited to read this after falling head over heels for Rick & Morty. Boy did it fall pretty flat.

Shaft #1-6 (digital)- This is a solid borrow. It wasn't bad, it just sorta is.

School of Judgement vol 1 (digital)- I liked it okay there were some fun moments, but I feel like there was something that got lost in translation. Maybe there were some other mangas I should have read to be in on the joke idk.

The Fix #1 (digital)- Mobbed up Cops, an activist underworld Boss that doesn't mind craving up people, and a cliff hanger involving the toughest cop on the force? I liked this comic; I'll most likely stick with this series through the first arc.

    The Tithe vol 1 (digital)

January Winner: Spidey #1 - The art is what sells me on this.
February Winner: Strange Fruit #1-2 - Has Mark Waid every written a stinker? (CGS Best Writer of 2015!)
March Winner: Spider-Man #1 - Miles Morales is back! YEAH!

    April List:
    Single Issues/Digital:
    The Amazing Spider-Man #1.4, 9
    Daredevil #5
    Darth Vader #17-18
    Star Wars #17
Doctor Strange #6 - One of the best books out there right now.
    Extraordinary X-Men #8
    Spider-Gwen #6
    Spider-Man 2099 #8
    Southern Bastards #12-13 (digital)

    Collected HC/TPB/Digital
    Baba Yaga's Assisstant
    Brain Camp
Peanut - These three are books I got from the library. They were all a lot of fun and worth the time. They're YA Lit graphic novels, so they're relatively quick reads.
    Nimona
Drowned city : Hurricane Katrina & New Orleans
    Batman: Death by Design
The Eternal Smile - I think this one did its job. I had a smile on my face after reading it. Clever book, by the affable Gene Luen Yang
